Feeling wired, tense, or like your body just won’t come down?

Try this quick nervous system reset.

Slowly move your tongue around your gums and the roof of your mouth.

It sounds too simple, but your mouth is full of cranial nerve pathways that help send calming signals back to the brainstem.

This is bottom-up regulation.

Not mindset.
Not ā€œjust breathe.ā€
Not trying to talk yourself out of it.

It’s giving your body a physical signal of safety.

And for overwhelmed mums, autism mums and carers living in constant fight or flight, these tiny tools can matter so much.

Tell me you have an autistic child without telling me you have an autistic child…

I’ll go first:
2 iPads, 4 TVs on, 12 lights blazing, and nobody is in any of those rooms. šŸ˜‚ IYKYN

Some mums don’t get help until their body forces them to stop.

And by then, it is not a little bit of burnout.

It is crisis.

It is collapsing in private.

It is pretending you’re okay while your whole nervous system is screaming.

It is being praised for coping while quietly wondering how much longer you can keep doing this.

This is why I talk so much about nervous system regulation for special needs mums.

Not because breathing fixes everything.

Not because regulation replaces real support.

But because your body needs somewhere to put the stress.

It needs tiny moments of safety.

It needs repair.

It needs to stop living like every single day is an emergency.

You are not weak because this life has changed you.

You are not failing because you need help.

You are a human being carrying a level of responsibility most people will never understand.

And you deserve support before you break.

My daughter is 13.
And after 10 years of toilet training (on and off), we are still here.

Not because we didn’t try.
But because strategies only work when everyone around the child is actually consistent with them.

Home. School. Support workers. Therapists. Family.
When everyone does something different, when plans aren’t followed, when support is patchy, the child is the one who pays the price.

Would it have changed everything if the right supports were in place and followed properly?
I don’t know.
And honestly, that’s the part that makes me the angriest.

Because maybe it could have.

I am as much to ā€œblameā€ as anyone else due to severe carer burnout so this isn’t about blaming others. It’s just a s**t (literally) situation.
