You may have seen us gently turning a baby’s head, touching their hands or feet, or changing their position during an infant consultation… but what are we actually looking for?
Primitive reflexes are automatic responses that babies are born with. They play an important role in early feeding, protection and movement, and they give us useful information about how a baby’s brain, body and nervous system are communicating.
During an assessment, we look at whether these responses are present, symmetrical and appropriate for the baby’s age. We also consider them alongside the baby’s birth and feeding history, muscle tone, head and neck movement, body symmetry, comfort in different positions and overall development.
No single reflex gives us the whole answer, and babies do not all develop according to an identical timeline. Primitive reflex assessment is simply one part of building a broader picture of how your baby is moving and adapting right now.
If you have concerns about your baby’s feeding, head preference, tummy time, comfort or early movement, get in touch.
