Many people come to breathwork as a way to relax. Interestingly, breathwork isn’t always relaxing.

In FBR, our sessions tend to follow a bell curve. The first half activates the nervous system, building toward a peak. The second half allows for integration and rest.

Along the way, that can look like a lot of different things. Sometimes tears. Sometimes energy, even a kind of restlessness. Sometimes discomfort passing through before it settles. Sometimes very little seems to happen at all.

So while most people experience moments of real relaxation in a session, there are also moments of activation and intensity, and both are part of the process, not a detour from it.

We think of this as training the nervous system toward flexibility, the capacity to move into activation, and to just as readily move back out of it.

In life, we need to be able to activate when it’s called for. To run. To meet a deadline. And then, afterwards, to actually come back down again.

Curious to feel it for yourself?

Have you noticed the way your breath and body respond to different stimuli?

How we might gasp and contract when something startles us.

How our shoulders shrug up and down when we’re laughing uncontrollably.

How our ribcage doesn’t flare when we’re feeling stressed or threatened.

How introducing rapid breath can bring on feelings of anxiety just from changing the breath itself.

When you lay down to breathe, we invite you to start consciously connecting your breath. From there, various breath patterns and patterns of tensioning start moving through the body.

There’s nothing “wrong” with this. There’s nothing to fix.

As practitioners, we’re tracking these shifts. We’re right there with you, witnessing them, meeting them, and when appropriate, offering them a new way.

Because maybe your body has been breathing in that startled pattern long after the threat has moved on.

Maybe when you lay down to sleep at night, you don’t need to be breathing at the same volume you were on your run this morning.

A breath pattern that serves us in one moment may not serve us in the next.

Connected breathing — what does it actually mean, and why does it matter in FBR? 🫁

It’s a specific technique (Conscious Connected Breathwork), but the technique isn’t the whole point.

The point is curiosity — using breath to notice what’s happening in your body and mind that usually runs on autopilot.

No forcing. No chasing an experience. Just paying attention.

That’s the heart of FBR.

I remember when I first started “doing the work”, I thought I had to do it all alone, in private.

I worked with practitioners solely 1:1, too afraid to be seen in front of other humans. Afraid I’d be seen as different, weird or wrong.

My somatic therapist ran group programs alongside her 1:1 work, and for about 12 months she kept planting the seed:

“We heal in community.”

It took me a whole year to finally join her 4-month group program.

I’ll never forget how nervous I was on those first few calls.

My voice would shake. I’d sweat. I’d tremble. I was so aware of myself and how I might be perceived.

But even more than that, I remember what came next.

The connection.

The witnessing.

The healing.

I eventually felt what she had been trying to tell me all along:

Yes, we can do some healing alone.

And we also need other humans.

We heal in community. We heal in relationship.

There are still women from that program I’m connected with today. Women who live in completely different pockets of the world, who reached out to me during some of the darkest moments of the last 2.5 years.

And I think there’s an important nuance here.

Other people can hurt us. Relationships can wound us. Community can have its own complexities, and healing doesn’t mean bypassing those things or pretending they don’t happen.

But other humans can also offer us something we simply cannot experience alone.

To be witnessed.
To be understood.
To be challenged.
To be held accountable.
To practise boundaries.
To experience repair.
To give and receive love.
To discover that we can be seen in our fullness and still belong.

Yes, we can experience hurt through relationship.

But through relationship, we can also discover the depth of connection, love, repair and healing that is possible.

Maybe we need both.

The quiet work of turning inward.

And the courageous work of allowing ourselves to be known.

At the end of every circle, each human gets the chance to share, including the practitioners.

And although every circle is completely unique, I often find myself falling into similar patterns of words when the stick comes to me.

Words of deep gratitude. Of reverence.

For this practice.
For the breath.
For the humans who continue to show up.

For the courage, curiosity and commitment held within the space.

Honouring the community that is slowly but surely building, and acknowledging, for this brief moment in time, the togetherness that this practice creates.

The words often sound the same.

I think that’s because I can never quite fully articulate just how much this practice means to me.

How much it means to share it with humans across the world, from all walks of life.

To those who have breathed with me so far: the deepest, heartfelt thank you.

To those yet to walk through the door and sit in circle: I can’t wait to meet you.

There’s something special about hearing how someone experienced their breath journey, whether it be in a 1:1 or in circle.

It’s also beautiful to receive words like this months down the track ✨

Each person arrives with their own reasons for being there, and each has their own experience that unfolds each time they breathe with me.

Thank you, Fawn, for trusting me with your experience and allowing me to share it.

If you’ve been curious about Facilitated Breath Repatterning, perhaps this gives you a little glimpse into what a session can be like.

✨ FBR circles & 1:1 sessions in Lawson
✨ Small groups of up to 5 people
✨ No previous breathwork experience needed

What happens when you actually allow yourself to slow down?

We spend so much of our lives moving.
From one thing to the next.
Thinking ahead.
Ruminating on the past.
Solving problems.
Reliving uncomfortable moments.
Doing our best to hold it all together.

With all this movement, we forget to create space to just BE.

Breathwork can offer you the chance to do just that.

To slow down enough to notice what’s happening beneath all the doing.

To come back to yourself.
To listen.
To feel.
To simply be with what is.

Nothing to achieve. No finish line to reach.

Just two hours to slow down, breathe, and create some space.

In circle, we do that together. We create connection, space and an opportunity to come back to ourselves.

You’ll find me in Lawson on Sunday afternoons at Flow State Studio, the home of FBR in the Blue Mountains.

No experience needed. Come as you are.

I experienced an incredibly painful flare up with a health condition yesterday. The last time it was that severe was in 2019. It landed me in the Emergency Department and was followed by surgery that, unfortunately, didn’t help.

As the pain flared, I could feel my system orienting around the perceived threat. I noticed the bracing. The terror. The anguish. The helplessness.

And of course, I noticed my breath.

During the flare, and in the hours afterwards - the practitioner in me quietly observing & tucking the information away to understand another day.

Because not every moment needs to become a lesson.

Sometimes, the most supportive thing we can do is notice.

Notice what our nervous system is doing.
Notice what our mind is doing.
Notice what our body is doing.

Without needing to change any of it.

Maybe noticing can be enough for today.
