Vision Australia welcomes comments from the federal government about improving the accessibility of broadcast media in Australia.

Making it easier to access broadcasts on smart speakers and reducing regulatory burdens on regional broadcasters would be a significant step in modernising radio services that would help people who are blind or have low vision stay informed and connected with their community.

Vision Australia has long called for an increase in audio description across free-to-air TV in Australia and was a key voice in the introduction of audio described content to limited SBS and ABC programming. An expansion of audio description across free-to-air TV would be a significant benefit to the blind and low vision community.

Vision Australia looks forward to hearing more detail from the government about how these changes will be implemented and what organisations like ours can play in supporting media to be accessible and inclauve for all Australians.

Vision Australia is keen to ensure people who are blind or have low vision stay informed during emergencies.

We’re interested in community feedback following the AusAlert system national test to understand if the information contained in the alert was accessible to people who are a blind or have low vision.

We want to hear from people who are blind or have low vision about how the AusAlert information appeared on their mobile device, including both the text and audio component of the alert.

We are interested in the experiences of people who use mainstream mobile devices such as an iPhone or Android, as well as those who use specialist devices such as a BlindShell, BigPurplePhone or similar.

📢 Accessible Census materials now available from the ABS.

The 2026 Census is fast approaching, with Census Night taking place on Tuesday 11 August 2026. To help ensure everyone can participate, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has made a range of accessible resources available for people who are blind or have low vision.

Available support includes:
✅ Braille Census forms
✅ Large print Census forms
✅ Online Census completion
✅ Audio resources available to listen to or download

If you require a Braille or large print form, you can request one through the ABS or by calling 1800 181 227.

The AusAlert system is set to be tested nationwide on Monday, July 2027. The test means your mobile device will vibrate and play a siren-like warning sound for about 10 seconds. An AusAlert message will appear on device screens that will clearly state it is a test.

A career in medicine has long been the goal of Anna Dang, and while being born legally blind might impact exaclty what that looks like, she's excited about the chance to pursue her dream.

With the support of Deakin University (and Seeing Eye Dog Kylie by her side), Anna's a great example of how people who are blind or have low vision can overcome the limits placed on them by others.

Have you encountered cyber scam or cyber fraud?

Vision Australia is working with the Department of Home Affairs to develop resources to support Australians who are blind or have low vision to stay safe online. Vision Australia would like to hear from people based in Melbourne who have encountered cyber scams or cyber fraud.

By sharing your experience, you will help Vision Australia create helpful resources and guides for other Australians who are blind or have low vision. For those that are interested, you may also be asked to share your story for media and marketing activity to help spread awareness of this issue.

Please note that everything discussed will be confidential. Vision Australia understands that cyber crime incidents can be distressing, so all information shared will be handled with care.
