Welcome the Winter Solstice 2023! The winter solstice, also called the hibernal solstice, occurs when either of Earth's poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sun. This happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere.
Also called: Midwinter; the Shortest Day; the Longest Night.
The Winter Solstice 2023 in the Southern Hemisphere will be at 12:27 AM on Thursday, 22 June - TODAY! (Central Australia Time).
The Winter Solstice astronomically marks the beginning of lengthening days and shortening nights. Today may be wet and cold, but we can look forward to more gardening time and the promise of sunshine as the daylight hours increase!
