Muscle Pump Activators (MPA) are now included in the Wounds Canada Best Practice Recommendations for Skin Health and Wound Management 2025

In Chapter 12, which covers venous leg ulcers (VLUs), MPA is listed as one of the advanced therapies to consider when a VLU isn't healing despite optimal treatment. MPAs, like the geko device, activate the calf-muscle pump and increase blood circulation to promote wound healing.

The calf muscles are often called the body's "second heart", pumping blood and lymphatic fluid back toward the heart with every step and ankle movement.

When patients can't move as they normally would, that pump stops working effectively, raising the risk of oedema, DVT, and venous ulcers.
