Australasian Lymphology Association The Australasian Lymphology Association (ALA) is committed to promoting the development of lymphology There is no cure.

Lymphoedema, a life-long distressing condition that affects people of all ages - from birth to old age. It is a progressive chronic disorder of the lymphatic system and if not treated early, the onset of lymphoedema can lead to regular hospitalisation due to infections and have distressing, ongoing effects on both the physical and emotional wellbeing of patients. The Australasian Lymphology Association (ALA) is the peak professional organisation promoting best practice in lymphoedema management, research and education in Australia and is committed to promoting the development of lymphology in Australasia. Our vision is to make a difference in all aspects of lymphology. We strive to improve the management of those with, or at risk of developing lymphoedema and enhance communication between health professionals, educators, relevant authorities and government in regard to oedemas and lymphoedema. The ALA is a public company limited by guarantee and registered as a health promotion organisation with charitable tax deductibility status. Wounds Australia 2026 Conference:

The ALA has just wrapped up what was an outstanding few days at the Conference - and what a calibre of sessions it was. The program delivered so many rich clinical learnings.

A huge thank you to Board members Bekk Christensen, Monika Samolyk and Libby Ringrose who travelled to Adelaide to represent ALA on the ground.

Day one at the Wounds Australia Conference in Adelaide has been a genuine highlight.

The trade hall was buzzing, with delegates stopping by the ALA stand throughout the day to ask about accredited courses and training - it's been wonderful to see such strong appetite for building capability across the sector.

Across the program, presenters explored different approaches to managing chronic wounds and oedema, a real reminder of how cloesly wound care and lymphoedema management sit together. And with such a big turnout, the energy in the room speaks to a growing and evolving field.

Thank you to everyone who visited us. Here's to day two.

New ALA Cellulitis Position Paper: Applying it in practice

Dr Robyn Sierla breaks down what the updated Management of Cellulitis in Lymphoedema/Chronic Oedema position paper means for day-to-day practice.

Key takeaways:

- Misdiagnosis is common with around 30% of presumed cellulitis cases are something else entirely (think stasis dermatitis, DVT, or lipodermatosclerosis).

- Compression can continue during acute cellulitis where tolerated, and should be reintroduced as soon as possible if removed.

- Antibiotic duration should be guided by clinical response, not a fixed course and mild inflammation can persist for weeks without indicating ongoing infection.

- Every patient with a history of cellulitis should be assessed for chronic oedema once the infection resolves.
