DID YOU KNOW? COMPRESSION GARMENTS AND COMPRESSION PUMPS ARE NOT THE SAME!

🦡 If you have Lymphoedema, Lipoedema or ongoing swelling, this information may help you!

Many people think compression stockings and compression pumps do exactly the same job. But did you know they work differently and can complement each other?

Let’s explain! πŸ‘‡

1️⃣ COMPRESSION GARMENTS DAILY SUPPORT

Medical compression garments provide controlled external pressure to help:

βœ… Manage and reduce swelling

βœ… Support lymphatic and venous fluid return

βœ… Reduce feelings of heaviness and discomfort

βœ… Support the muscle pump during walking and movement

βœ… Help maintain improvements following lymphoedema treatment

Compression garments are often an important part of long-term lymphoedema management.

2️⃣ COMPRESSION PUMPS INTERMITTENT PNEUMATIC COMPRESSION (IPC)

Compression pumps use inflatable chambers that apply pressure in cycles to the arms or legs.

They may help:

βœ… Reduce excess fluid accumulation

βœ… Temporarily reduce swelling

βœ… Relieve feelings of heaviness and tightness

βœ… Support fluid movement as part of a treatment plan

βœ… Complement Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), exercise and compression garments

SO WHICH ONE IS BETTER?

The answer is that they serve different purposes!

Compression garments provide ongoing support during daily activities, while compression pumps deliver intermittent pressure during treatment sessions.

For some people, using both as part of an individualised management plan may be beneficial.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: Compression is not suitable for everyone. Proper assessment, garment fitting and screening for contraindications are essential, particularly before using a compression pump.

At K Health Therapy, we are passionate about educating our community about lymphatic health, lymphoedema, lipoedema and compression management.

We also offer lymphatic therapy services and a range of medical compression products.

DID YOU KNOW? SILICONE CUPPING IS MORE THAN JUST A BEAUTY TREATMENT!

Scars, tight fascia, cellulite, ageing skin and restricted tissue movement could gentle silicone cupping help?

Many people associate cupping with traditional massage, but did you know that silicone cupping can also be used as part of scar therapy, myofascial treatments and facial wellness?

At K Health Therapy, we believe in understanding how the skin, fascia, connective tissue and lymphatic system work together.

Let’s explore FIVE ways silicone cupping may support your body. πŸ‘‡

1️⃣ SCAR TISSUE & SCAR MOBILITY

Have you ever noticed tightness, pulling or restricted movement around an old surgical scar?

Following surgery or injury, scar tissue can sometimes become less mobile than the surrounding skin.

Gentle silicone cupping may help:
βœ”οΈ Encourage movement of the skin and superficial connective tissue
βœ”οΈ Temporarily reduce feelings of tightness
βœ”οΈ Support comfort and flexibility around fully healed scars
βœ”οΈ Complement professional scar therapy

This may be relevant to C-section scars, abdominal surgery scars and other fully healed surgical scars.

2️⃣ FASCIA & CONNECTIVE TISSUE

Fascia is a network of connective tissue found throughout the body. It surrounds and supports muscles, nerves and other structures.

Silicone cupping uses gentle negative pressure to lift the superficial tissues rather than compress them.

This may:
βœ”οΈ Encourage temporary tissue mobility
βœ”οΈ Help reduce feelings of superficial tightness
βœ”οΈ Complement myofascial massage techniques
βœ”οΈ Support relaxation and comfort

3️⃣ LYMPHATIC & SUPERFICIAL FLUID MOVEMENT

Did you know your lymphatic system helps maintain fluid balance and supports immune function?

Gentle moving suction may influence superficial tissue fluid movement. However, silicone cupping is not an established treatment for lymphoedema and should not replace Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), prescribed compression or specialist care.

People with lymphoedema, unexplained swelling or fragile skin should seek appropriate clinical guidance before cupping.

4️⃣ CELLULITE & SKIN APPEARANCE

Cellulite is extremely common and is influenced by connective tissue, fat distribution, hormones and genetics.

Gentle moving cupping may temporarily change the appearance of the skin through massage and tissue movement.

However, research has not established that silicone cupping permanently removes cellulite or changes the underlying tissue structure.

5️⃣ FACIAL CUPPING & AGEING SKIN

As we age, our skin naturally changes due to collagen loss, reduced elasticity and other factors.

Gentle facial cupping may:
βœ”οΈ Encourage temporary superficial circulation
βœ”οΈ Support relaxation of facial tissues
βœ”οΈ Provide a soothing facial massage experience
βœ”οΈ Temporarily change skin appearance

It is not a proven treatment for reversing wrinkles or restoring collagen.

WHY PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE MATTERS

Silicone cupping is not suitable for everyone. Technique, suction strength, skin condition and medical history all matter.

It should not be applied over open wounds, unhealed scars, active infections, suspected blood clots or fragile skin. Special care is needed after surgery and during or following cancer treatment.

AT K HEALTH THERAPY

We offer a range of clinical and wellness treatments, including scar therapy, myofascial cupping, remedial massage and lymphatic care.

Our approach focuses on individual assessment, comfort and appropriate treatment.

How does deep belly breathing help?
1. Supports lymphatic flow: As the diaphragm moves during breathing, it creates pressure changes in the chest and abdomen that help move lymph fluid towards the bloodstream.
2. Encourages fluid return: Diaphragmatic breathing supports the movement of lymph through the central lymphatic vessels, including the thoracic duct.
3. Complements lymphoedema management: Gentle breathing exercises can be incorporated into a lymphoedema self-management routine alongside compression, movement, skin care and Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), where appropriate.
4. Promotes relaxation: Slow, controlled breathing may reduce stress and encourage relaxation, which can be beneficial for people managing chronic swelling and discomfort.
5. Supports circulation: The movement of the diaphragm also assists venous blood return towards the heart.

πŸ’™ DID YOU KNOW LYMPHOEDEMA CAN AFFECT MANY DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE BODY?

Many people believe lymphoedema only affects the legs, but did you know it can also develop in:

🦡 Legs, ankles and feet

πŸ’ͺ Arms, hands and fingers

πŸ’† Face, head and neck

πŸ’™ Abdomen and trunk

🌸 Ge***al area, including the v***a, l***a, p***s and sc***um

πŸ’™ Groin, pelvis and buttocks

Lymphoedema occurs when the lymphatic system cannot adequately drain lymphatic fluid, leading to swelling and sometimes changes in the skin and underlying tissues.

Ge***al lymphoedema can develop following pelvic surgery, cancer treatment, lymph node removal or radiation therapy. It can also occur in people with primary lymphoedema.

Symptoms may include swelling, heaviness, tightness, discomfort, skin changes and difficulties with everyday activities.

Early recognition, appropriate assessment and individualised lymphoedema management can make an important difference.

Advanced Reflexology builds on traditional reflexology by using more specialised techniques and a deeper understanding of the body's anatomy and physiology.
It involves applying specific pressure and movements to reflex areas, primarily on the feet, which are traditionally believed to correspond with different parts of the body.

Remedial Back Massage is a targeted therapeutic treatment focusing on the muscles and soft tissues of the back, shoulders and neck.

Why combine both treatments? Combining Advanced Reflexology with Remedial Back Massage provides an approach that addresses both muscular discomfort and relaxation.

May benefit some clients living with lymphoedema, lipoedema or cancer-related conditions. However, the treatment needs to be adapted to their medical history, symptoms and individual needs.

THE AMAZING HUMAN BODY HOW EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED.

Each with its own important responsibilities. But what makes the human body truly fascinating is how all these systems work together to keep us alive, healthy, balanced and functioning every single day.

No body system works completely independently. Changes in one system can influence others. Our heart pumps blood, delivering oxygen and nutrients throughout the body.

Our lungs provide oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. Our nervous system controls movement, sensations, communication and countless automatic functions.

Our muscles and bones work together to support posture, movement and stability. Our lymphatic system helps maintain fluid balance, supports immune defence and returns excess tissue fluid to the bloodstream.

Our kidneys filter the blood, remove waste and help regulate fluid and electrolyte balance. Our digestive, endocrine, reproductive and integumentary systems also play essential roles in maintaining our overall health. What makes this even more interesting. When one system experiences changes or difficulties, other systems may also be affected.

🩷 DID YOU KNOW LIPOEDEMA CAN BEGIN IN CHILDHOOD? 🩷

🦡 Have you ever wondered why some young girls develop larger legs, hips or thighs, even when the rest of their body remains relatively slim?

It may not always be related to weight gain!

One possible explanation is a chronic condition called LIPOEDEMA (LIPEDEMA).

🌸 WHAT IS EARLY-ONSET LIPOEDEMA?

Early-onset or juvenile-onset lipoedema refers to lipoedema that begins during childhood or adolescence.

Lipoedema is a chronic condition involving an abnormal accumulation of fatty tissue, most commonly affecting the legs, hips, thighs and sometimes the arms.

Although it predominantly affects females, many people don’t receive a diagnosis until adulthood.

πŸ” SIGNS TO BE AWARE OF:

🩷 Disproportionately larger legs, hips or thighs

🩷 Both legs commonly affected symmetrically

🩷 Tenderness, heaviness or pain in the affected areas

🩷 Easy bruising

🩷 Nodular or uneven fatty tissue beneath the skin

🩷 Feet often remain relatively unaffected

🩷 A family history of similar body changes may be present

Did you know? Lipoedema often becomes noticeable during hormonal changes, particularly puberty.

Unfortunately, some women spend years believing their body shape is simply due to being overweight.

However, not everyone with larger legs has lipoedema, and a proper clinical assessment is important.

I recently welcomed a lovely new client who has just turned 30 and has been diagnosed with lipoedema.

During our consultation, she shared that she remembered having noticeably larger legs from a very young age.

As she grew older and entered adulthood, she noticed that her legs continued to change and become progressively larger.

Her experience highlights something important: lipoedema symptoms can be present for many years before a person receives a diagnosis.

πŸ‘§ Did you notice changes in your legs during childhood or puberty?

πŸ‘© Or were you diagnosed with lipoedema much later in adulthood?
