Weight loss and lipoedema are often talked about as though they’re the same issue... but they’re not.

Lipoedema is a chronic condition involving an abnormal accumulation of adipose tissue, commonly affecting the legs and arms. While balanced nutrition and regular movement can support overall health and wellbeing, lipoedema tissue can remain despite changes in weight.

For many people, understanding this distinction can help make sense of changes in their body that haven’t responded in the way they expected.

If you’re wondering whether your symptoms could be associated with lipoedema, learning more and seeking an appropriate medical assessment can be a helpful first step.

Save this post for later or share it to help raise awareness.

Conservative management is an important part of lipoedema care and can support symptom management, mobility and overall wellbeing. It can be relevant at different stages of lipoedema and whether or not surgery is something you are considering.

At Lipoedema Surgical Solution, we encourage women to understand and explore conservative management as part of their individual care. There is no single approach that will be right for everyone, and your management plan may change depending on your symptoms, lifestyle and broader health needs.

POTS and lipoedema are separate conditions, but there can be areas of overlap that are important to understand.

POTS affects the autonomic nervous system and can cause symptoms such as dizziness, palpitations, fatigue, brain fog and difficulty remaining upright for long periods.

Research has also identified higher rates of joint hypermobility and connective-tissue laxity in people with lipoedema, while POTS is commonly seen alongside hypermobility and connective-tissue conditions.

Some symptoms can overlap too, including fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance, leg heaviness and difficulty standing for extended periods.

This does not mean one condition causes the other. It simply highlights why symptoms such as dizziness, palpitations or a significant increase in heart rate when standing may be worth discussing with your doctor rather than automatically attributing them to lipoedema.

Swipe through to learn more about POTS and its connection to lipoedema.

Some signs of lipoedema can be easy to overlook, particularly when feelings like heaviness, tenderness or frequent bruising have simply become part of everyday life.

Lipoedema can look and feel different for each person. Some people may notice tenderness or discomfort, a feeling of heaviness, easy bruising, symmetrical changes in both legs, nodular-feeling tissue, or that their feet appear relatively unaffected.

These signs don’t necessarily mean you have lipoedema, but they may be worth exploring further. If you’ve noticed changes in your body or symptoms that don’t feel quite right, you deserve to have those concerns heard and appropriately assessed.

Sometimes, simply having more information can help make sense of what you’ve been experiencing. Awareness can be a gentle first step towards finding answers and understanding what support may be right for you.

This is lipoedema.

It can affect women of different ages, body shapes, sizes and backgrounds. While lipoedema often causes a disproportionate build-up of tissue in the legs or arms, it may also involve pain, tenderness, heaviness, easy bruising and changes in mobility.

No two experiences look exactly the same. Some signs may be noticeable, while others are felt long before they are recognised by others.

Greater awareness helps women better understand their symptoms, seek informed medical advice and feel less alone in their experience.

Water-based exercise can be a gentle, supportive way to stay active with lipoedema, especially when pain, heaviness or swelling make movement feel difficult.

Because water supports much of your body weight, activities like swimming, water walking and aqua aerobics can feel easier on the joints, muscles and ligaments.

Water also provides gentle natural compression, which may help support circulation, lymphatic flow, swelling and feelings of heaviness.

It can also help build strength, improve mobility and support balance, without placing as much stress on the body as land-based exercise.

Movement does not have to be intense to be beneficial. Finding something sustainable and enjoyable can make it easier to include in your routine.

Have you tried swimming, aqua aerobics or walking in the pool?

Cellulite and lipoedema can both change the appearance and texture of the skin, but they are not the same.

Cellulite is a very common skin characteristic that creates a dimpled or an uneven appearance. It is generally painless and considered a cosmetic concern.

Lipoedema is a chronic medical condition involving a disproportionate build-up of adipose tissue. It may also cause pain, tenderness, heaviness, swelling and easy bruising, and it usually affects both sides of the body symmetrically.

The difference is not always obvious from appearance alone. Looking at how the tissue feels, where changes occur and whether other symptoms are present can help provide a clearer picture.

Swipe through to compare some of the key differences. These signs can be useful to be aware of, but they can vary from person to person and are best considered as part of a broader clinical assessment.
