Over my thirty years in the dirt, I've heard the same frustrated question every winter without fail: "Why won’t my Christmas cactus bloom?" People drive themselves crazy worrying about it. They try fancy fertilizers, they repot the poor thing, they move it to the brightest window in the house hoping to coax out a single flower. I usually have to break two bits of news to them. First, that treasured plant you’ve been lovingly calling a Christmas cactus all these years... almost certainly isn’t one. (Don't panic. The real identity is incredibly easy to spot once you know the secret). Second, the trick to getting those spectacular, sweeping winter blooms has nothing to do with expensive plant food. It actually requires you to treat the plant in a way that feels completely wrong to most modern gardeners. My mother used to shove hers in a drafty, dark pantry near the basement stairs for a month. I’ve written down exactly how to tell what kind of plant is actually sitting on your windowsill, and the very specific, slightly weird routine that forces them to explode with flowers. Get out of the plant's way, put down the expensive fertilizers, and just try this instead.

I was walking through the neighborhood this weekend, looking at everyone’s lavender waking up. Some bushes look like they belong in a professional greenhouse. Others... well, they look like a woody, scraggly mess. I used to be terrified of touching mine, mostly because I once made the one irreversible mistake that guarantees a lavender plant will never grow back. It took a long time to learn there is a very specific, almost invisible line on those stems you simply cannot cut below. Stay just above it, and you get that perfectly tight, bushy dome of purple blooms all summer. Cross it, and you're left with dead twigs forever. There’s a very short window right now in spring to get this right, along with a quiet little 'insurance policy' trick I do every May in my own borders, just in case. I sat down and jotted down the four things I’m doing to my bushes this week to fix the woody ones and keep the good ones going strong. If yours are looking a bit tired or out of control, I've left the link in the comments so you can have a read.
