๐ฃ The Hallux: Small Joint, Big Job ๐ฃ
Did you know your big toe (hallux) plays a critical role in walking and running?
During the push-off phase of gait, the hallux needs dorsiflexion (upward movement) to allow efficient propulsion. This movement helps your body move smoothly over the foot and generate forward momentum.
When there isn't enough motion available, the body often finds other ways to compensate, including:
โก๏ธ Increased pressure through the lesser toes or forefoot
โก๏ธ Rolling over the side of the joint
โก๏ธ Altered ankle, knee, hip, or lower back mechanics
Over time, these compensations can contribute to problems such as:
๐น Forefoot pain
๐น Plantar fasciitis
๐น Bunion progression
๐น Achilles tendon overload
๐น Knee, hip, or lower back discomfort
If you're experiencing foot pain, stiffness in your big toe, or recurring lower limb injuries, assessing hallux function may provide an important piece of the puzzle ๐งฉ
๐ฃ Efficient movement starts with the foundation.
