Madeleine is part of the SCHS District Nursing team, but her connection to our organisation runs much deeper.
Twelve years ago, Madeleine and her family were supported by the SCHS Palliative Care service after her husband, Brian, was diagnosed with cancer. At the time, they had been married for five years and were raising their one-year-old son. The diagnosis came as a shock, and like many families, they held onto hope for recovery.
Madeleine, a nurse herself, was able to manage some aspects of Brian’s care at home. But she reflects that the support from the SCHS palliative care team brought a sense of warmth, stability, and reassurance during an incredibly uncertain time. Small acts of care like arranging a recliner to keep Brian comfortable made a meaningful difference.
Brian passed away just six months after his diagnosis. Madeleine describes that time as a blur, filled with emotion. What has stayed with her, though, is the compassion and kindness shown by the nurses who supported them.
“The team weren’t just there to provide care in preparation for Brian’s passing,” Madeleine shared. "Mel and Tracey would come into our home and were so caring of us as a family. I always felt truly listened to and comforted by their kindness. It always felt natural them coming into our home, and their experience and expertise helped us navigate a very difficult journey.”
Stories like Madeleine’s are a powerful reminder of the difference compassionate care can make, for both patients and the people who love them.
