We love TCM because it's not a one-pronged approach to health.

TCM treatments involve medicinal herbs and foods combined with lifestyle and energetic support including acupuncture and tai chi.

It's a holistic approach that addresses your physiological needs as well as your environment, mental, emotional and spiritual needs.

These elements have such a profound impact on how we feel and cope with pain, illness and poor health. Taking a more holistic approach and addressing multiple areas of health and wellbeing is so supportive for anyone with a chronic condition.

That's why we looked to TCM to formulate our health products, and encourage a multi-action approach to support pain and health concerns.

So the good news is that chocolate, yes chocolate, is an anti inflammatory food!

Not your average dairy milk, sugar laden store bought chocolate, so sorry!

Real chocolate, called raw cacao is the pure form of chocolate used to make those foods.

Real chocolate without all naughty additions, has magnificent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits stemming from its wide variety of plant chemicals and flavonoids. And it could be useful for pain reduction too!

A 2020 article published in Pain Therapy Journal stated: "it contains a wide range of phytochemicals, including polyphenols, which have been shown to exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions, and also to have a positive effect on pain"

What type to eat? It should be 85% dark chocolate or higher to get the most raw cacao and the lest sugar and additions.

Following our post about exercising WITH joint pain, here are a few more tips to remember:

1. Work within your range. Pushing beyond your capacity during a flare up can cause more damage and inflammation. Gentle supported movement within your personal range is key.

2. Working with an instructor can help you learn what your range is and give you practical exercises suited to your needs in the moment.

This is a much safer approach and over time, your range and capacity will change to. Even if you have a one on one session now and then, it helps!

Should you exercise while your joints are sore & inflamed? Well yes, and no.

It's a double edged sword. When joints are feeling particularly sore or weak, exercise is often the last thing we feel like doing, but it can also be the best thing to help.

So what kind of exercise is best when you're actively sore & inflamed?

GENTLE & SUPPORTED exercise!

1. A slow or moderate walk - within your current capacity.
2. Swimming is wonderful because your whole body is supported. Again, be moderate. It's not a race!
3. Straight leg lifts (lying on your back, lifting leg straight): Helps maintain circulation and movement without pressure, because you're fully supported by the ground.
4. Assisted leg curls (seated extension & flexion of the knee): Maintains range of motion of the joint while your body is fully supported.

Ayurveda is still a part of primary healthcare across India.

It provides prevention as well as treatment, and employs multiple strategies to treat the whole person - not just a single ailment.

Yoga, breath work and meditation are all part of Ayurvedic medicine. All of these have benefits for joints health, mobility and pain management.

Ayurveda also uses herbs and herbal preparations for treatment too.

Acachia Catchu - one of the key ingredients in Cararthron - is an Ayurvedic herb traditionally used in health conditions that require 'cooling.'

It's the anti-inflammatory properties of this herb that make this traditional application of the herb effective.

When you're affected by joint pain or inflammation, it's hard to know what exercise is may be best for you and how much you can cope with too.

Don't want to work beyond your ability or add further strain or stress - physically or mentally.

Any exercise that works you a little harder than usual and makes you puff just a little is going to be helpful.

We hope that helps!

Have you got any exercise tips or suggestions to share?

As part of your multi-level approach to healthy joints and reduced inflammatory pain, anti-inflammatory foods are a MUST, and oily fish are one of the best!

The best types of oily fish? SMASH:

S- Salmon
M- Mackeral
A - Anchovies
S - Sardines
H - Herring

Their anti-inflammatory properties come from exceptionally high Omega 3 Fatty Acids. These fish, especially the smaller ones, have less mercury and other toxins too.

Oily fish also provide amino acids including methionine and arginine that help build and repair cartilage, plus glycine, proline and lysine essential for collagen production and tissue health.

Oily fish are a source of Vitamin D, essential for healthy immune function, bone health and managing pain and also Zinc, which is well known to be joint supportive.

Can you live without it? Maybe...but oily fish has so much to offer if you have joint inflammation.

Eat wild caught fish and have 2-3 servings per week.

Exercise is vital for healthy joints but when you have joint issues, there are a few things you should do before undertaking an exercise program...

- Your doctor can help assess current ability, and can often direct you to local exercise providers for professional support.

- Know your limitations. Your current pain, inflammation and mobility will impact what exercises you can do, how often and how long. Don't push it!

- A personal program will help work within your limits and build up. Find a practitioner experienced with arthritis, inflammation and injury. Make sure they know your personal joint concerns (note: not all PTs are trained this way).

- Start simple and slow. With consistency, you'll build strength and increase movement.

It's never too late to start either! If exercise is new to you, we definitely recommend start at #1 - see your doctor, and get moving!

Say Hello to Cararthron: our herbal joint support formula.

Cararthron uses two key herbal ingredients from Traditional Chinese Medicine & Ayurveda. They are:

Scutellaria baicalensis (aka Chinese Skullcap) &
Acacia catechu

These herbs have been used for hundreds of years in their traditions to treat ailments from insect bites to diarrhoea, respiratory issues, high blood pressure and immune concerns.

Within their traditions, each herb is used for 'reducing heat' (TCM) or 'cooling' (Ayurveda). For us, this is the anti-inflammatory capacity of the herbs.

Both herbs possess analgesic (pain relieving) qualities and are strong antioxidants.

This is why they're the key active ingredients in our unique joint health supplement, Cararthron.
