A lot of people think they need to feel fully motivated or “ready” before seeking support for an eating disorder or disordered eating. In reality, many clients walk into their first session feeling deeply conflicted.

Part of them wants freedom, flexibility, energy, and peace around food. Another part feels terrified of letting go of behaviours that have helped them cope or feel safe. Both can exist at the same time.

As an eating disorder dietitian, my role is not to force recovery or pressure someone into change before they are ready. Often, the first step is simply creating space to understand what the eating disorder is doing for you, what fears exist underneath it, and what support might feel manageable right now.

Recovery does not begin with perfection or certainty. Often, it begins with curiosity, compassion, and one small step towards support.

You don't need to look ‘sick’ to deserve eating disorder recovery.
ALL bodies deserve care, nourishment, safety, and recovery.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see as an eating disorder dietitian, is the belief that someone has to look a certain way before their struggles are considered “serious enough.” But eating disorders and disordered eating do not have one body type, one appearance, or one story.

You also don't need a formal diagnosis to seek support. If food, eating, movement, or body image are taking up mental space, impacting your relationships, increasing anxiety, or making life feel smaller - that matters.

Many people minimise their experiences because they are still functioning, still socialising, still working, or because others cannot “see” what is happening internally. But distress around food and eating deserves support long before things reach crisis point.

You're allowed to ask for help even if you feel unsure.
You are worthy of care exactly as you are today.

For many children with feeding difficulties, being listened to builds trust, reduces fear, and opens the door to curiosity.

One simple tool I often use is a food preferences list:
• foods that look interesting
• foods that feel like a “maybe”
• foods that are a definite no
No pressure to eat - just exploring.

If your child’s eating feels stuck or causes distress (for you or them), the Dietitians at Liberation Clinic have extra post-grad training in feeding challenges, and can help you move forward - gently and safely.

🍽️ Less pressure can actually help kids eat more.
When a child isn’t eating, it’s natural to encourage “just one bite.”
But pressure often increases anxiety, and anxiety reduces appetite.
One helpful approach is a therapeutic response called the division of responsibility:
• Parents decide what, when, and where food is offered
• Children decide if they eat and how much
This reduces battles at the dinner table, and helps the nervous system of the child feel safer around food and in this environment.
💛 Lowering pressure is not giving up — it’s creating calmer mealtimes for everyone.
The Dietitians at Liberation Clinic have extra training in feeding challenges, and can help you use this approach safely while monitoring growth and nutrition.

“But if I don’t push my child to eat then they won’t eat. Where will they get their nutrients from?”
This is one of the biggest worries parents share with me when we are discussing ways to reduce pressure on the child at meal times, and implementing the 'division of responsibility' approach to feeding, which puts the control back in the child's court about 'if, and how much' they choose to eat. And it’s a very valid concern!

When children eat a very limited diet, they may miss out on key nutrients, which is understandably (and rightly) concerning for parents.
The good news? We can often add nutrition into the foods they already accept through fortifying foods, and use supplements when needed to ensure nutrient requirements are met. This 'buys us time' to work on strategies to increase the range of accepted foods at the child's pace, on their terms.

The goal is creating safety for the child around meal times and ensuring nutritional adequacy now, while we slowly work on variety over time. If you’re worried about nutrition or growth, the Liberation Clinic Dietitians have post-grad training in feeding challenges, and can help reduce your kiddo's nutritional risk and give you a clear plan.

Is your child sensitive to textures?
Many children with feeding difficulties prefer:
• crunchy, dry foods
• foods that look and feel the same
And feel distressed by:
• mushy or mixed textures
• wet or unpredictable foods

This isn’t random, it’s the nervous system of the child reacting to unpredictability. However, it can make it tricky to fit highly unpredictable foods like fruit and vegetables in around sensory needs! One banana is not the same texture, colour, taste as the next banana!

Understanding your child’s food & sensory preferences is a powerful first step towards meeting the needs of kids & teens with fussy eating or ARFID (or adults- you're never too old to get support!). The Dietitians at Liberation Clinic have extra training in feeding difficulties so that we can guide this process gently and safely, without forcing or adding to stress.

I recently sat with a mum who felt worn out and defeated. She had tried everything to get her child to eat. She had tried being relaxed, being firm, rewards, encouragement… and nothing worked. She was feeling as though she was ‘failing’ as a parent because her child simply would not eat.
When a child’s eating feels extreme and stuck, it is NOT caused by your parenting!
Some children struggle with food because their nervous system finds eating overwhelming, it is not because they’re being difficult or because you have ‘done something wrong’.
You’re not failing, and you don’t have to figure this out alone 💛 If this sounds like your family, the Liberation Clinic Dietetics Team have additional post-grad training in feeding difficulties (like ARFID) and can help

* Using GLP-1 drugs for Binge Eating series *
If you've ever tried to explain binge eating to someone who's never experienced it, you'll know how hard it is to put into words.

This is how one of our clients described it. And it captures something really important: binge urges aren't about being hungry. They're urgent, intense, and often feel completely non-negotiable in the moment.

Which is exactly why a drug that reduces physical hunger can only go so far.
Ozempic and other GLP-1 medications can quiet the food noise. But they can't touch the emotional wiring behind that hot-plate feeling — the stress, the patterns, the history that makes the urge feel so impossible to resist.

That's the work we do at Liberation Clinic. And it's work that lasts long after the drug wears off!

Curious whether we're the right fit to help you with binge eating? There's a link in the full article on our website to book a free 15-minute discovery call with our director Emma — no obligation, just a conversation.
