From 1 July 2026, all Supported Independent Living providers in Australia are required to comply with a new set of NDIS Practice Standards known as Module 5A. These standards raise the bar for how SIL support is delivered, with a strong focus on participant rights, safety and genuine choice and control.
The four new standards cover:
π Supported Decision-Making: participants make their own decisions about their home and daily life
π Safeguarding: participants are protected from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation
π Practice Governance: strong systems, policies and oversight are in place
π Tenancy & Housing Arrangements: clear agreements exist between participants and providers
At Essential Nursing, these aren't new concepts. They're values we've operated by from day one. Our recent audit returned zero non-conformities, and we are fully compliant with every requirement of Module 5A.
For families choosing a SIL provider, compliance with the new standards isn't just a legal requirement. It's a signal that your loved one is in safe, accountable hands. π
