From 1 July 2026, all Supported Independent Living providers in Australia are required to comply with a new set of NDIS Practice Standards known as Module 5A. These standards raise the bar for how SIL support is delivered, with a strong focus on participant rights, safety and genuine choice and control.

The four new standards cover:

💙 Supported Decision-Making: participants make their own decisions about their home and daily life
💙 Safeguarding: participants are protected from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation
💙 Practice Governance: strong systems, policies and oversight are in place
💙 Tenancy & Housing Arrangements: clear agreements exist between participants and providers

At Essential Nursing, these aren't new concepts. They're values we've operated by from day one. Our recent audit returned zero non-conformities, and we are fully compliant with every requirement of Module 5A.

If you've been navigating the NDIS for a while, you've probably come across the terms SIL and SDA. But what do they actually mean, and what's the difference?

Here's a simple breakdown:

🏠 SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation) is the physical home itself. It refers to purpose built or modified housing designed specifically for people with high support needs or extreme functional impairment. The SDA provider owns and maintains the property.

💙 SIL (Supported Independent Living) is the support that happens inside the home. It refers to the hands on assistance participants receive with daily tasks, personal care, community access and more. The SIL provider, like Essential Nursing, delivers this support.

Think of it this way. SDA is the house. SIL is the team that supports you within it.

Choosing a Supported Independent Living provider for someone you love is one of the most important decisions a family will ever make. And knowing which questions to ask can make all the difference.

Here are some of the most important things to ask any SIL provider before you commit:

💙 Are they registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission?
💙 What does a typical week of support actually look like for a participant?
💙 How do they match housemates and what happens if it isn't working?
💙 Who are the support workers and how are they trained and retained?
💙 How will they communicate with your family once your loved one moves in?
💙 What happens if your loved one's needs change over time?
💙 Can you visit the home and meet the team before making any decisions?

About the role:
This is a hybrid clinical and operational leadership position across our NDIS Supported Independent Living homes. You'll provide clinical oversight, lead and mentor a dedicated support team, manage day to day house operations and ensure participants receive consistent, high quality, person-centred care aligned with their goals.

Your responsibilities will include:
💙 Clinical oversight, assessments and escalation of participant health needs
💙 Safe medication management and infection control practices
💙 Leading daily operations of SIL homes
💙 Supervising, coaching and mentoring Support Workers
💙 Managing compliance, incidents and WHS requirements
💙 Communicating with participants, families, allied health and GPs

What we're looking for:
💙 Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse
💙 Minimum 5 years paid RN experience
💙 2-3 years leadership experience in clinical, disability or community care
💙 Current First Aid and CPR certification
💙 National Police Clearance
💙 Valid NDIS Worker Screening Check
💙 Valid WA Driver's Licence and reliable vehicle

With a lot of conversation happening around NDIS reforms right now, we want to take a moment to offer some reassurance to the families and participants we support.

While changes are coming to some parts of the NDIS over the next few years, the supports that matter most for daily living are not changing. Things like in home support, community nursing care, medication assistance, personal mobility equipment, transport and Specialist Disability Accommodation remain protected.

Changes are also being rolled out gradually, and the NDIA has committed to letting participants and providers know well in advance of anything that affects them.

At the beginning of August, members of the Essential Nursing team attended the Innovate Care AI & Automation Forum 2026 in Sydney, and what an event it was.

The forum brought together NDIS and Aged Care leaders to explore how innovation, automation and smarter systems can strengthen compliance, reduce administrative burden and ultimately free up more time for what matters most: the people in our care.
