Sometimes it can take a couple of treatments to get the horses nervous system and body back to optimum condition. Being tight in muscle groups here and there, some pinched nerves and sore from a nasty bite in a back leg all add up to a bitof discomfort. That’s why it can take a couple of remedial and chiropractic sessions. Young Eden was very happy to walk her thoroughbred chestnut mare feeling a lot happier.

When an owner calls and says’my horse just doesn’t feel quite right - I find tension all over. Most horses I see with a sore back will be sore where the back of the saddle is and behind. But there will stuff all over - tendons at the base of skull and upper neck, wither down to lower leg, and the back end with blocked sacral nerves on the surface and deep in the hindquarters. From there down the leg to the gaskin and to lower leg. When they have a bit of tightness there will always be more than you think. That’s just how it is and it’s completely normal. The total body weight of the horse is supported by the legs and they have small compact muscles that get very tight. I could go on and on :)

We have been studying the anatomy of The Horse for a long time. Someone gave me a book with this illustration, when I first started out 23 years ago.

Now this is a long toe- the owner had been quite ill for some months and the horses hooves did not get a trim- this is what can happen. Made a huge difference with a good cut back - the veins in the forearm came up straight away now that the frog of the hoof could pump some blood up the leg. After a trim and connective tissue release all over = much better walk. The horse was completely lame when I got there this morning:)

I noticed my big horse had fallen away in condition over the hind-quarter in the back end. It had been a while - and I could not get him to fill out there. Everything seemed ok, but as my horse dentist Alison pointed out - the pain caused by the sharp edged molar in his mouth, was the cause of some stress to the jaw joint and his brain. The combination of this can affect the muscular system - and the power supply (gluteals and hamstrings).
