I have wanted to visit Mt. Hiei for a long time I decided to go this time around. It took a train ride, cable car, ropeway and bus to get to the eastern side of the Enryakuji complex. Enryakuji, the headquarters of the Tendai Buddhist sect, was founded by Saicho in 788.
Tendai Buddhist sect has an interesting history, where it wielded significant spiritual and political power with a large army of warrior monks. To curb the power of these monks, Oda Nobunaga attacked and destroyed the remote complex in 1571. It was later rebuilt and remains the Tendai headquarters today.
The main temple, Konpon Chudo, houses the 'Unextinguishable Dharma Lamp' which has remained lit for over 1200 years. This building has been undergoing renovation since 2016. A large warehouse structure was built around the whole temple to protect it from the changing weather, while renovations continue unimpeded. This national treasure will take 15 years to complete. Visitors can view the progress from platforms. Interestingly, the paint colours from the original building were recorded so that future generations could repair and maintain the temple as it was. Just amazing!
