I have wanted to visit Mt. Hiei for a long time I decided to go this time around. It took a train ride, cable car, ropeway and bus to get to the eastern side of the Enryakuji complex. Enryakuji, the headquarters of the Tendai Buddhist sect, was founded by Saicho in 788.

Tendai Buddhist sect has an interesting history, where it wielded significant spiritual and political power with a large army of warrior monks. To curb the power of these monks, Oda Nobunaga attacked and destroyed the remote complex in 1571. It was later rebuilt and remains the Tendai headquarters today.

The main temple, Konpon Chudo, houses the 'Unextinguishable Dharma Lamp' which has remained lit for over 1200 years. This building has been undergoing renovation since 2016. A large warehouse structure was built around the whole temple to protect it from the changing weather, while renovations continue unimpeded. This national treasure will take 15 years to complete. Visitors can view the progress from platforms. Interestingly, the paint colours from the original building were recorded so that future generations could repair and maintain the temple as it was. Just amazing!

I am very glad to be back in Kyoto and being able to visit another beautiful temple. Kenninji is considered to be the oldest Rinzai Zen temple in Kyoto, founded by Eisei in 1202. It is noted for the twin dragon ceiling in the Dharma Hall, the dry Zen garden and the golden screen of Fujin, the Wind God and Raijin, the Thunder God.

This is one of the rare temples where photos are allowed to be taken.

A wonderful class last weekend. It is always a joy to share Reiki with others, whether through a client session or within a class setting. In classes especially, there is something special about witnessing the wonder of Reiki through the eyes of enthusiastic beginners. Learning is never a one-way street, and each person brings their own wisdom and experience to the space.

Thank you Libbie, Val, Meg, Ivy, and Kristen for the insights, perspectives, and experiences you shared throughout the class. May your Reiki practice continue to bring balance, harmony, and deeper connection along your spiritual path.

When there is inner and outer noise, so much is missed because it distracts from what is. Our surroundings fade from view.

When quiet, so much can be observed, so much can be heard, and so much can be understood. When quiet, body language speaks with a clarity that words often obscure. Connection, balance, and harmony become more available.

Words are powerful. Words we think and words we speak.

'Without Practice, No Emergence.
To know and To Understand are different. Even though we know, without putting that knowledge to practice, we can not understand.

Just reading a description of a medicine’s good effects won’t cure an illness.

Zen also something we can not understand until we put to practice.'

Kodo Sawaki Roshi (1880-1965)

This is true of any spiritual practice, including Reiki. Intellectual understanding can only be a mental concept. Physical practice creates realisation beyond the mind. Instead of reading, just do.
