Here’s to the dads who show up.

Not always with the answers. Not always knowing exactly what to say or do. But willing to sit on the floor, join the game, learn something new, celebrate the little wins and keep showing up again tomorrow.

Working with children and families means we get to see just how powerful those everyday moments of connection can be.

So this Father’s Day, we’re celebrating all the dads, stepdads, grandads, foster dads and father figures helping their little people grow into exactly who they’re meant to be.

I have just spoken with Michele Ricamato, a DIR Floortime Certified Speech-Language Pathologist and Trainer, about what she will be presenting when she comes to Adelaide in November, and I have now had a sneak peek at her slides.

They are wonderful.

And while Michele is a Speech-Language Pathologist, what she will be sharing is relevant to all of us supporting children developmentally.

We will be thinking about children who don't always show us what they know or can do in traditional ways.

The child who cannot participate in a standardised assessment.

The child whose assessment results don't seem to match the child we see in everyday life.

The child who has lots of words but finds back-and-forth interaction difficult.

The child who uses scripts or repeated language.

The child who can communicate when they feel regulated and connected, but has much less language available when stressed or overwhelmed.

The child who can demonstrate a skill with a therapist but cannot access that same skill at home, preschool or school.

And the child whose communication differences may be interpreted as "behaviour".

This links so beautifully with the developmental thinking behind DIRFloortime.

Rather than looking only at what a child can or cannot do, we become curious about the whole child.

What is happening developmentally?

What is happening in the interaction?

What role are regulation, sensory processing and the environment playing?

How is the adult responding?

What is the child communicating to us, even when they aren't using words?

And what might we need to change in ourselves or the environment to help the child engage, communicate and participate?

Michele will also explore some of the intervention pitfalls that can occur when goals are driven primarily by standardised or traditional assessment results.

We will look at developmental language, AAC through a developmental lens, and importantly, what we can actually DO.

There will be practical strategies for Speech Pathologists, OTs, teachers and educators, and parents.

We will also explore how Speech Pathology and Occupational Therapy can work collaboratively around children with communication challenges, rather than separating communication, regulation, sensory processing, interaction and participation into individual pieces.

That is one of the things I am most excited about.

Because when we work developmentally, we aren't looking at isolated skills.

We are looking at the child, their relationships, their individual differences and their ability to engage with and make sense of the world around them.

After seeing Michele's slides, I am even more excited to have her coming to Australia.

What looks like a simple activity in the kitchen can tell our Occupational Therapists so much.

When a child is making something, preparing food, washing up or putting things away, our OTs can explore:

• Sequencing: Can they work out what comes first, next and last?
• Safety awareness: Do they notice potential risks and know what to do?
• Comprehension: Can they understand what is being asked and follow the steps?
• Independence: What can they already do for themselves, and where do they need support?
• Visual spatial processing: Can they work out where things are, how objects fit together and how to organise their workspace?
• Motor planning: Can they work out how to move their body to complete the task?
• Fine motor skills: Can they open containers, pour, spread, cut, stir and manipulate everyday objects?
• Attention and organisation: Can they stay with the activity and keep track of what they are doing?
• Problem solving: What happens when something doesn’t go to plan?

And importantly, we can see what the child CAN already do.

Daily living skills aren’t just about learning to make a sandwich or wash a cup. They give us a window into how a child understands, plans, organises and participates in their everyday world.

At My Therapy House, our OTs assess children through real, meaningful everyday activities, because that is where we can really see what helps a child become more confident and independent.
