🍃You know you’re safe now…but your body hasn’t fully caught up yet.🍃
This is something I hear often in therapy.
And it makes a lot of sense.
When someone has lived in survival mode — whether through trauma, chronic stress, or relational insecurity — the nervous system learns to stay alert.
It learns to scan…
to anticipate…
to protect.
So even when life becomes objectively safer — meaning the actual situation around you is no longer dangerous — the body doesn’t always update straight away.
And what people often notice is things like:
• feeling on edge, even when everything is calm…
• not being able to fully relax or switch off…
• a sense of unease that doesn’t really have a clear reason…
• or that gap between “I know I’m okay”… and “I feel okay”.
And this is really important:
It’s not a lack of understanding.
And it’s not something you can think your way out of.
Because over time, regulation can be rebuilt through small things…
• like feeling your feet on the ground…
• or noticing your breath…
• or staying with a sensation without judgement for a few seconds.
It’s not about forcing calm.
It’s about slowly teaching your body that safety is possible now.
