Abbie is one of the registered nurses putting patient experience at the centre of every interaction in her role in Robina Hospital’s Medical Imaging department.

In her experience, it’s the simple things that mean the most.

“We understand the patients might be feeling vulnerable, especially if they are coming to see us after a new cancer diagnosis, so we do everything we can to put them at ease,” she said.

“We get a lot of positive feedback form the patients about the great culture here and how much they enjoy coming to Robina Hospital.”

Abbie said it all starts with a happy team and is one of the main drivers behind their ‘Culture Club’ initiative.

“We started it last year to get everyone together outside of work and it’s been great for the team culture,” she said.

“I don’t think I’ve ever worked in such a supportive environment.”

Rebecca (Bec) has been part of our Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) team for three years now as a Midwifery Navigator, supporting women with complex pregnancies.

“In this role, you support women and families through some incredibly challenging periods, and being able to provide continuity, support and compassionate care during those times is something I value deeply,” Bec said.

Bec previously worked as an emergency nurse, then transitioned to midwifery 12 years ago and discovered a passion for women's health and complex care.

We are so proud to announce she is the winner of our Midwifery Services Excellence Award for 2026. 👏

"I feel incredibly honoured and grateful," Bec said.

"It means a great deal, especially because I genuinely love both my job and the team I get to work with every day."

Congratulations, Bec. 🌟

We are proud to congratulate Gold Coast University Hospital’s Professor of Intensive Care Bala Venkatesh on being appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours List.

The honour recognises his significant contribution to critical and intensive care medicine, infection control and tertiary education over a career spanning more than 40 years. 🏥

A globally respected intensive care specialist, researcher and educator, Professor Venkatesh has helped shape critical care medicine across the world through his leadership in sepsis research, medical education, and clinical innovation.

Alongside his role at Gold Coast Health, he serves as Chair of the Queensland Statewide Sepsis Steering Committee and Global Program Director for Critical Care at The George Institute for Global Health.

Reflecting on the honour, Professor Venkatesh is quick to shift the focus away from himself.

“The award is a recognition of the teachers who guided me and the wonderful teams I have had the privilege to work with,” he said. ⭐

Congratulations, Professor Venkatesh, on this well-deserved recognition and thank you for your extraordinary contribution to healthcare, research, and education.

Turning research into real-world care is changing lives at Gold Coast Health.

Associate Professor Shanthi Sarma is leading the integration of research into everyday clinical care, helping to deliver innovative treatments for people experiencing complex mental ill health.

“Our work enables us to be one of the few public hospitals in Australia able to rapidly translate novel treatments into routine clinical care for people experiencing mental ill health,” she said.

Her work in interventional psychiatry includes leading Queensland’s involvement in the world’s largest randomised controlled trial of subcutaneous ketamine for depression — helping generate real-world evidence for people often excluded from clinical trials.

Associate Professor Sarma recently received the inaugural Research Excellence Award at the Gold Coast Health Research, Innovation and Transformation Showcase, recognising the team’s commitment to improving outcomes through research-led care.

By embedding research into everyday practice and fostering multidisciplinary collaboration, Gold Coast Health continues to strengthen equitable access to innovative mental health care for the community. 💙

Marion has been serving communities as a nurse for more than 40 years and still loves it just as much.

"It was always something that felt really natural and I easily fell into it," she said.

"I wouldn't change a thing if I went back and did it all over again."

Her early days were spent in Intensive Care, Emergency and flying in helicopters to retrieve patients. 🚁

She's now a much-loved member of our Minor Injuries and Illness Clinic team at Tugun Satellite Health Centre.

"I love being here because I know what we do is really important for the community."

Thank you for your daily kindness, laughter and care, Marion. 🫶

Sue has received the Amy Enderlin Assistant in Nursing Excellence Award not one, but twice.

Always coming into work with a smile and can-do attitude, Sue, shows everyone why she is an irreplaceable member of our paediatric team.

"I can honestly say I love my job and look forward to coming to work," she said.

"No two days are the same. It's really special to support families when they're going through such challenging times."

She's known as "Nanna Sue" on the ward and always ready to support both her team and families.

"My favourite part is getting to see our long-term patients leave hospital with the best possible outcome," she said.

"Also playing games, reading books, talking and just spending time with the children and adolescent youth can make a big difference to their day."

Congratulations on this award, Sue!

When we say our emergency nurses are the very best… we mean it. 👏

Our Emergency Department showed up in force at this year’s Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards, with more than 30 staff nominated across multiple categories. 🌟

Among them was Acting Assistant Director of Nursing, Toni Taylor, who said the recognition reflects the incredible culture within the team.

“It’s incredibly humbling to have so many of our nursing cohort nominated,” Toni said.

“It reflects the strong support within our Emergency Department and the commitment our nurses bring every day while caring for our community.”

To all our emergency nurses: thank you for the compassion, resilience and care you bring to every shift. You make a difference to countless lives. 💙

[Trigger Warning: mentions su***de]. Today’s dress code: colourful socks. 🧦💚

Today our staff came together to celebrate Crazy Socks4Docs Day, using bright socks as a conversation starter and a reminder to check in with one another. ✨

A simple conversation can have a powerful impact. Sometimes, asking “How are you really doing?” is exactly what someone needs to hear.
