Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) 🌿

Hawthorn has a long history of use in both European herbal medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine, with records of its use dating back centuries.

Traditionally, Hawthorn was valued as a digestive herb and was used for concerns such as food stasis, abdominal fullness, and digestive discomfort. Over time, it became particularly well known in Western herbal medicine for its traditional use in supporting the heart and circulatory system.

Hawthorn is traditionally used by herbalists for heart and circulatory wellbeing, healthy blood pressure, digestion, and general vitality.

The herb contains a range of naturally occurring compounds, including flavonoids, proanthocyanidins (OPCs), phenolic acids, pentacyclic triterpenes, vitamin C, and rutin.

A classic botanical with a rich history in traditional herbal medicine. 🌿

Did you know Chaste tree has been used for centuries in traditional herbal medicine, particularly for women’s menstrual and reproductive health?

Also known as Vitex or Monk’s Pepper, Chaste tree is a beautiful Mediterranean shrub whose small, dark fruits are the part traditionally used in herbal preparations.

✨ Why is Chaste tree traditionally used?

Chastetree has been studied for its potential role in supporting:

• Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms
• Cyclical breast tenderness and discomfort
• Menstrual cycle irregularities
• Hormonal concerns involving prolactin
• Certain luteal-phase and ovulatory concerns
• Hormone-related acne
• Menstrual-related mood changes, bloating and headaches

Research suggests Chaste tree may influence dopaminergic activity in the pituitary gland, which can affect prolactin secretion and may help explain some of its effects on menstrual symptoms.

Interestingly, older herbal traditions viewed Chaste tree as a herb of “chastity”, which is where its name comes from. Its peppery fruits were even used as a spice in European monasteries, earning it the nickname Monk’s Pepper. 🌿

Modern research has found promising evidence for Chaste tree, particularly for PMS and cyclical breast pain, although results can vary depending on the preparation, dose and individual.
