Why your TMJ pain isn’t just about your jaw.

If you’ve been dealing with persistent TMJ clicking, locking, or dull facial pain, you’ve likely tried local treatments—like splints or deep muscle release—only to find the symptoms keep coming back.
Here is the hard truth: pushing through jaw exercises or heavy resistance training when the underlying mechanics are off often backfires. It triggers a compensation cycle, leading to severe, secondary neck pain because your nervous system simply isn’t ready for that load.

The reason local interventions often fail is that the TMJ doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Its mechanical foundation is deeply rooted in your cervical spine. They are bound together by shared structure and a nervous system that reacts in a cascading loop.
This is exactly why I focus my acupuncture treatment on the bigger picture. By adjusting the fascial tension across the head, face, collarbone, ribcage, and upper limbs, we aren‘t just treating the ”symptoms“—we are creating systemic space.

My goal is to de-sensitize the nervous system and unload the pressure on the jaw. This is how we effectively manage the migraines, jaw pain, eye pressure, and neck stiffness that often accompany TMD, rather than just chasing the pain in circles.

Oops, I did it again. đŸ«
If I’m moving slowly in the clinic, it’s because I re-strained my calf—and it’s worse than before. đŸ™‚â€â†”ïž
I thought I was being careful. I was pain-free during daily activities but still had some discomfort with plyometrics and eccentric loading. I knew my calf wasn’t ready for basketball, so I tried a "casual" game of badminton instead. Well, one thing led to another, the intensity went up, and snap—a sudden sharp pain in my right calf without any contact. It felt like being kicked by a rock.
Initial assessment: Grade 2–3 tear of the gastrocnemius and soleus. Thankfully, the Achilles is safe.
I’m always telling my patients, "Be patient with your recovery." Now, I’m living proof of why that matters. Just because the pain is gone doesn't mean the tissue is fully healed. Over-eagerness only sets you back.
Looks like I’m off the court for at least 2–3 months. Back to the drawing board for my rehab. đŸ«

A place where you can slowly breathe again.

At TWO HEALTH ACUPUNCTURE, we believe healing begins with feeling cared for — gently, patiently, and as a whole person, not just a symptom.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, there is a core principle: if a condition involves the 'Exterior,' it must be addressed before the interior can be treated. I apply this philosophy to musculoskeletal pain by viewing the skin as the body's primary Exterior.

In my practice, the skin is more than just a protective layer; it is the first threshold of the entire sensory and structural system. If the tension held within this primary interface is not first resolved, the path to the deeper fascia and muscle fibers remains effectively 'locked.'

This is why I approach the Exterior with such patience. I allow the needles to engage lightly with the surface first, inviting the skin's tension to dissolve. True release of deep-seated pain cannot be forced; it begins by honoring and softening the very layer that encompasses it.

How do we understand the body at TWO HEALTH ACUPUNCTURE? 🌿

One of the core ideas we use is the Five Elements — a simple way to look at how your body stays connected and balanced.

Instead of focusing on just one symptom, we look at the bigger picture.
Everything is part of a cycle:

đŸŒ± Wood (Liver) → movement & flow
đŸ”„ Fire (Heart) → circulation & clarity
đŸŒŸ Earth (Spleen) → digestion & energy
đŸŒŹïž Metal (Lungs) → breathing & defence
💧 Water (Kidneys) → recovery & reserves

These systems support each other like a circle.
When one area is under stress, it can show up somewhere else.

In the clinic, this is how we guide our thinking — not just “where is the pain?”, but “why is it happening?”

Whether it’s tight shoulders, low energy, poor sleep or ongoing stress, we aim to understand the pattern behind it and support your body back toward balance.

If you’ve ever felt like your health concerns are connected (but hard to explain), this framework often helps things make more sense.

We’re often told we don’t “look like” traditional Chinese medicine practitioners or acupuncturists.

And that’s okay.đŸ€Ł

We’re not here to look like practitioners.
We’re here to help people feel better, move better, and live healthier.

Because at the end of the day,
it’s not about how we look —
it’s about what we can do for you. đŸ˜ŠđŸ«¶

I often hear the same complaint from my clients: "I slept for so long, so why do I wake up feeling like there are two blocks of lead hanging off my shoulders? My whole body feels heavy, as if I haven't rested at all—or no matter how much I sleep, I just can't get enough."

I always tell them: This happens because the "rest" you think you’re getting is actually just "standing by" for your nervous system.
It’s not just your body that’s tired; it’s those countless nerves that are stretched too thin.
There’s a common misconception that exhaustion only comes from manual labor or intense physical activity. But in my experience, the "nervous system fatigue" caused by long hours of sitting and high-pressure environments is often far more stubborn than simple muscle soreness.

When you're at your desk tackling endless emails or dealing with sudden projects, your brain is actually in "battle mode." Even if your body isn't moving, your sympathetic nervous system is like an engine with the gas pedal floored—constantly firing. When you get home and collapse onto the sofa, or even sleep for 8 hours, you think you're letting that engine relax. In reality, it might still be idling at high speed, never actually getting a chance to cool down.

Why "staying still" won't fix your stiffness
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we say, "Prolonged sitting injures the muscles." When you remain stationary, your blood circulation drops to its lowest speed. Imagine a very slow-moving river; the silt and debris (metabolic waste and inflammatory markers) settle directly into the gaps of your joints and muscles.
This is why simply lounging on the sofa watching YouTube or Netflix, or even sleeping for 8 to 10 hours straight, can actually make your body feel even more "rusty" the next day. You’ve given your body static rest, but you’ve forgotten to perform a "system reboot" for your nervous system.

I often share two ways to help the body truly relax:
1. "Dynamic Guidance":
After work, don’t rush to lie down. Go for a walk or a gentle 20-minute bike ride. This isn't for "exercise"—it’s about manually activating your body's "pump." By slightly raising your heart rate, you push fresh blood into deep tissues, flushing out accumulated debris like a river clearing its bed. This is the best "coolant" for your nerves.
2. Let me help "unlock" your nervous system:
When your entire system is stretched to its limit, that’s the perfect time for acupuncture and herbal medicine to step in.

‱ Acupuncture: By using needles to directly regulate your autonomic nervous system, we can force that overheated sympathetic nervous system to cool down and awaken the parasympathetic nervous system responsible for repair.
‱ Herbal Medicine: Based on your constitution, I use "Qi-regulating and spirit-calming" formulas. This isn’t just "tonifying" the body; it’s like applying a "Buff" to your nervous system, allowing it to self-repair more effectively during deep sleep.
Give your body some "quality" time
Fatigue isn't just about sore muscles; it’s about the depletion of the nervous system.

If you feel like you can't sleep off the exhaustion, come have a chat with me at the clinic. We won't just address the tension in your shoulders—we'll help the nerves that have been on edge all day find a long-overdue sense of peace.

Jaw muscle soreness?
Try Jiache (ST6) — Part 2.

Located about one finger-width above the angle of the jaw,
you’ll feel a slight depression when pressing.

Gently massage for 1–2 minutes,
2–3 times daily to help relax jaw tension.

Combine with Xiaguan (ST7) for better results.

Save this for jaw pain relief.

Ever notice how your legs feel incredibly tight after a long day at the desk? Most people think the problem is in the legs themselves, but the truth lies in how you’re using your entire body.

It All Starts with Your Posture
When we slouch, our upper body leans forward. To stop ourselves from literally falling over, our lower back compensates by arching forward. At this point, your center of gravity has shifted away from your "sit bones" (ischial tuberosities), and your body enters compensation mode.

The "Skin Debt"
As this habit sticks, your body becomes more tilted. Your upper body needs more "slack" in the skin to move forward, but since our skin has a fixed length, it has to "borrow" space from elsewhere.
The most common place to borrow from? Your legs. While the outer layer of your skin (the epidermis) provides protection, the real elasticity comes from the deeper dermis and subcutaneous tissues. When your upper body demands more room, your body shifts the tension down to your legs.

The Hidden Cause of "Crossing Your Legs"This leads to a very common habit: pinching or crossing the legs.
Many think this is just a preference or a sitting style. In reality, it’s often a structural compensation. Your body is "borrowing" space from your legs just to keep your upper body functional.

The Long-Term Cost
Once this becomes a habit:
‱ The TFL (Tensor Fasciae Latae) gets pulled out of alignment.
‱ The Greater Trochanter (the bony part of your outer hip) starts to protrude.
‱ To stabilize this shift, your body grows more soft tissue to hold the bones in place, leading to those stubborn "knots" or tight muscle bands.
‱ The Adductors (inner thighs) become overactive, locking your entire leg into a distorted tension pattern.

The takeaway: Your body isn't "broken"—it’s simply adapted to the way you've been living. Long-term habits have shifted your structural balance.
