September is Su***de Prevention Month ๐Ÿ’›

This month is an important reminder that connection, compassion and conversation can make a difference.

Sometimes the people around us may be struggling in ways we cannot see. Taking the time to check in, listen without judgement and remind someone that support is available can mean more than we realise.

At More Opportunities, we encourage everyone in our community to look out for one another โ€” our participants, families, colleagues, friends and loved ones.

You donโ€™t need to have all the answers. Sometimes simply checking in, being upfront with what you see and genuinely listening is a powerful place to start.

If you or someone you know needs support, help is available:

๐Ÿ’™ Lifeline โ€“ 13 11 14
๐Ÿ’™ Beyond Blue โ€“ 1300 22 4636
๐Ÿ’™ Kids Helpline โ€“ 1800 55 1800
๐Ÿ’™ In an emergency or if someone is in immediate danger โ€“ call 000

Start a conversation. Stay connected. Look out for each other. ๐Ÿ’›

Meet the Team Monday ๐Ÿ’™

This week, we're introducing Felicia, our Service Manager!

Your favourite part of your job:
My favourite part of my job is seeing our participants and teams succeed. I love finding ways to improve the quality of our services, supporting our staff to grow, and helping participants achieve positive outcomes.

What participants can expect when working with you:
You can expect someone who is honest and committed to providing high-quality, person-centred support. I work closely with participants, families, and our teams to ensure services are responsive, respectful, and focused on achieving meaningful outcomes.

A fun fact about yourself:
Before joining the disability sector, I worked in the fitness industry as a personal trainer. I have a Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) and am passionate about continually improving services and finding innovative ways to support both participants and our team.

Hi everyone! Voting closes tonight and we would really appreciate your support in our nominated three categories

SIL Provider of the year
Support provider of the year
Support coordinator of the year

Here is some additional information from the awards organisation also!

How to Nominate:

Head to https://www.tasmaniandisabilityawards.com/ and submit your nomination through our online form. It only takes a few minutes!

You can nominate anyone also that you believe deserves recognitionโ€”a mate, a colleague, a family member, or someone you admire from afar. ๐Ÿ’™

Who Can Be Nominated:

We celebrate people across the entire disability communityโ€”participants, support workers, coordinators, practitioners, organisations, services, and community heroes. If they're making a real difference in someone's life, they deserve to be recognised!

How It Works:

Once we close nominations tonight, an independent national judging panel reviews all submissions based on achievement, impact, and contribution. Then we gather on 19 September at Wrest Point Casino to celebrate the incredible people who make Tasmania's disability community shine.

Meet the Team Monday ๐Ÿ’™

This week, we're introducing Chelsea, our dedicated Service Coordinator!

How long have you worked in the disability sector?
6 years.

What is your favourite part of your job?
Being able to give back to people and make a positive difference in their lives. I enjoy supporting participants to achieve their goals, build their independence, and seeing the confidence they gain along the way.

What can participants expect when working with you?
A respectful, person-centred approach where you're listened to, supported and empowered. Chelsea is passionate about advocating for participants, maintaining clear communication, and providing consistent, high-quality support. She also admits she can crack some shockingly bad jokesโ€”but promises there's always a laugh!

Fun fact about Chelsea
When she's not supporting our participants and collegues, you'll find Chelsea on the football field on weekends, either dominating the ruck or up forward looking to kick a few goals!

We're lucky to have Chelsea as part of the More Opportunities team! ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ’™ Your Health Matters โ€“ Don't Put It Off ๐Ÿ’™

Looking after your health is one of the most important things you can do.

Regular health checks can help detect health concerns early, often before symptoms appear. Whether it's a skin check, dental visit, eye test, breast screening, cervical screening, bowel screening or a routine visit to your GP, these appointments can make a real difference.

For people living with disability, accessing healthcare can sometimes be more challenging, which makes having the right support even more important. Everyone deserves the opportunity to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.

If you support someone with disability, consider asking:
โœ”๏ธ When was your last health check?
โœ”๏ธ Is there anything you'd like to speak to your GP about?
โœ”๏ธ Do you need support arranging or attending an appointment?

Small conversations today can lead to healthier tomorrows.

At More Opportunities, we're committed to supporting participants to access the healthcare they need and encouraging proactive conversations about preventative health.

๐Ÿ’™ Early detection saves lives. Let's work together to make preventative healthcare a priority.
