Ever felt like self-care is one of those things other people do?

The ones with more time, money, or freedom.

For many people, self-care feels more like a luxury than a necessity, making it easy to push aside—waiting for when you’ve got more time, finished the to-do list, or finally have the house to yourself.

But here’s the thing: you don’t have to wait for the perfect time to offer yourself self-care.

Because I suspect you’re already doing one of the most basic forms of self-care.

Eating.

It’s one of the simplest, most essential ways to care for yourself.

And it doesn’t require a face mask, a quiet corner, or even a free hour.

What if, instead of thinking of self-care as something ‘extra,’ you saw your meals, snacks—any eating occasion—as a way to take care of yourself in the most literal sense?

It’s not the most glamorous self-care. But it’s self-care, nonetheless 🤷‍♀️

So, I invite you to take a moment to consider what self-care really means to you. Could eating be a part of it?

Acknowledging and responding to hunger isn’t always easy.

For many, the sensation of hunger can be hard to recognise…

…or absent altogether (hey there my neurodivergent friends!)

Or, it might bring up a lot of uncomfortable emotions, especially if you’ve been disconnected from the sensations of hunger for years.

While sensations associated with hunger offer a helping hand, becoming skilled in listening to your hunger cues isn’t the ultimate objective of having a more peaceful relationship with food.

And you’re not failing at becoming an intuitive eater if you and hunger aren’t acquainted yet…or never will be.

So what can you do instead?

✨ Start with Curiosity: Instead of trying to force yourself to feel hunger, approach it with curiosity. Ask yourself, “What, if anything, am I noticing in my body right now?” Whether it’s actual hunger, some other sensations, or the thoughts and feelings surrounding it, the goal is to observe without judgement.

✨ Consider Your Hunger History: Reflect on how your relationship with hunger has developed over time. Have you been taught to ignore it? Punish yourself for feeling it? Never felt it? Understanding your hunger history can help untangle some of the emotions wrapped up in it.

✨ Give Yourself Permission: It’s okay to eat when you’re hungry. It’s okay to eat even if you’re not sure you’re hungry. It’s okay to not have this all figured out right now. Giving yourself permission to explore your hunger or just meeting that biological need for food —without having all the answers—is a powerful first step.

I’ve had people hire *me* to take photos before, so I’m not the total worst at it, but having a pop-up shoot with Jax from meant I had to step out of my comfort zone being the ‘photographer’ and not being in control of everything - the lighting, posing and…

…being able to quickly delete photos of myself that I didn’t like! 😬

To be completely honest with you, I wasn’t in raptures about all the photos when they came back - not because of the photos themselves or Jax work - cos she is incredible, but because I was seeing myself in poses and angles that I don’t normally see myself in.

There was an incongruence in my brain.

Between the database it has built about what *it* knows I look like, and then trying to make sense of these new images.

Of course, I *knew* it was me, but it’s a ‘me’ my brain is not used to (typically at the end of my outstretched arms taking a selfie, amiright?!).

But, what I did notice on this occasion, was that I could be neutral and pragmatic about them - not hate on myself or spiral like I have done in the past when I’ve had other people take my photo.

I wanted to share this with you because body image ‘work’ is not a single thing.

And it’s not one-and-done.

There isn’t a destination to arrive at and you are definitely not alone in finding situations and experiences confronting or challenging to navigate.

It can also be slow, painstaking work and then surprise you like it did me, that actually your relationship with yourself is shifting and changing.

Do you find it uncomfortable having your photo taken?

Are there things that you do to help you move through that discomfort?

Would it help to share what I did to take the ‘eeeeek’ energy about someone else taking my pic down a notch?

Lemme know below ⬇️

It’s hard to let go of the need to know it’s ‘working’ when we’re used to operating in a system that only views things as either ‘working’ or ‘not working’. But I’m curious…

Does wanting something to measure help? Or is it putting an obstacle in your path? (FYI there’s no right or wrong answer here- you get to choose!).

I’m curious because our words matter.

And 'measuring progress' implies a quantifiable change. (Quantifying and counting s**t
comes straight from Diet Culture's handbook).

So, if you hold fast to wanting something to measure as a sign of progress, you may run the risk of activating your diet mentality. (And just end up swapping measuring your portions, calories, and steps for something new).

Rather than asking; “How do I measure my progress so I know this is working?” you could ask;

What might I be noticing about…(my eating/mood/energy/binges/body image/etc.) that will tell me…(I’m headed in the direction I want to be going/my relationship with food and body is shifting/I’m recovering/I’m less wrapped up in Diet Culture/I’m more connected with my body etc.).

Or;

“If I take weight out of the equation for a minute, what would I love to be different about my relationship with food and body in 3 months, 6 months, a year?”

Those two questions may just give you a deeper, richer and more fulfilling path forward.

Your binge eating and your worth.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Two completely separate things.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Truly.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You may have been made to feel like you are not good enough because you binge eat.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That you are a failure because you can’t get your eating together.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m so sorry that has happened.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I want you to know that your binge eating has nothing to do with your worth as a human on this planet.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You are worthy if you binge eat.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You are worthy if you are working on healing your relationship with food and still binge eat.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You are worthy if you haven’t binged for ages and find yourself binging again.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Today, tomorrow, forever.

What do you notice about the quality of your breathing after you have been holding your breath for a bit? (Maybe you can remember what that felt like if you played that game to see who could hold their breath the longest?!)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When you do finally take that first breath, you are gasping for air and inhaling and exhaling quickly right?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Your breathing feels urgent.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s quite different from the calm, pleasant rhythm of inhaling and exhaling that happens when you are going about your business, trusting that your body knows what it needs to do with its breathing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Gasping for air after holding your breath is your body overcompensating for being denied a biological need.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Food is also a biological need.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, it makes sense that our bodies respond in a similar way when we deny them food or ENOUGH food.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Not getting enough to eat is like holding your breath.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When you next get the opportunity, eating is going to feel urgent and rapid and like you can’t get the food in quick enough.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

When we’re pursuing weight loss, the goal is pretty simple.

Lose weight.

Which kinda makes ‘measuring progress’ simple as well.

Because weight loss is tangible, we understand what it means when it’s ‘working’.

We know it’s working when the number on the scale is decreasing.

We know we’re on the right track when we need to buy new (smaller) clothes.

So, what do we do when it comes to Intuitive Eating or any other non-diet approach where weight loss isn’t the outcome of focus?

I gotchu! Head on over to the blog to read 35 ways to measure progress that have nothing to do with weight or hopping on the scale.

Diet culture has done a darned good job at convincing us that we should be able to survive on not much food.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That we are doing it all wrong if we crave food.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That we should be able to override our hunger.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But the truth is, food is fundamental for our survival as a species.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This means our super-smart bodies have evolved in such a way that we find food pleasurable and rewarding.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That food tastes good and feels good in our bodies.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because if food and eating was an awful experience, of course, we would avoid it!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It is therefore in our bodies best interest to make food something we want to keep coming back to.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It is our natural biology.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We are hard-wired to find food and eating pleasurable.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, this is your gentle reminder that there is nothing wrong with experiencing a desire to eat or craving a particular food.

The world is a lot right now.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The uncertainty, pain and sadness we’ve known over the past couple of years feels unrelenting.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you are noticing urges to control your food or body with everything that is going on, know that this is normal.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Feeling out of control with your food and eating when the world feels out of control is normal.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Feeling like you're using food more at the moment to escape from what's happening in the rest of the world is normal.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, what do you need?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💜 Do you need to reach out to your therapist, your dietitian, your treatment team, your family, your trusted friends, your support groups and accounts online?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s worth remembering that not getting enough to eat will kick in your body’s survival mechanisms - one of those being to increase your anxiety in an attempt to get you to think about food.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💜 So, do you need to come back to your foundational eating skills and bring some regularity to your eating pattern again?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💜 Do you need to limit your exposure to news coverage or be thoughtful about your consumption?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💜 Do you need to really deliberately give yourself permission to eat the amounts and types of foods your body needs right now, minus the judgement in order to demonstrate to your body that it can find a place of safety with food?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💜 Could you do with an increase in the amount of compassion you show towards yourself for bingeing, for restricting, for wanting to lose weight?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sending love and holding you in my thoughts.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As I’ve been putting the content together, I’ve been thinking more about why I really wanted to share it with you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Diet Culture makes it easy.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Diets tell you exactly what to do, how to do it and when to do it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There’s a start. And there’s an end.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There’s an objective, tangible outcome.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Not dieting and doing Intuitive Eating instead is actually pretty airy-fairy in comparison.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And that can make the staunchest anti-diet rebel feel uneasy and wonder if they’re better off sticking with the devil they know…
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I don’t want Diet Culture to win.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What I do want, is to make your transition away from dieting and towards a more peaceful relationship with food as effortless as possible.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Obvs I can’t click my fingers and magically make it so. 🪄
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But, I can offer you a framework to make it as easy as possible for you to know where it is you are heading.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So the process doesn’t seem so abstract.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When we meet tomorrow I’ll be covering:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⚡ The #1 way Intuitive Eating is sold that sets people up to fail
⚡ The 3 big obstacles getting in the way of making Intuitive Eating stick (and how you can overcome them)
⚡ A 3-phase framework for creating a smoother path from binge eating (or out-of-control eating) to Intuitive Eating
⚡ How to feel skilful with Intuitive Eating faster with fewer setbacks
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We'll also do a live Q&A so you can ask me any questions you have after the teaching bit.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I hope to see you there 💜

You can keep chocolate in the house and not eat it all in one sitting.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And yes, this also applies to whatever that food is that you feel has a hold over you. (That when it is in the house, you're bound to eat it all in one go.)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you scoff at this because you're sure it can't be true for you, I hear you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I know that feeling out of control around certain foods is a very real experience for you. It makes complete sense that the only logical solution to not feeling out of control would be to have strict rules around food and not keep it in the house. Outta sight, outta mind, right?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As a grown, autonomous adult, you 100% get to decide how to 'deal with' that chocolate, ice cream, chips…
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
AND, I want you to know your relationship with those foods doesn't have to be cloaked in tension or leave you in a panic if they manage to make their way into your house.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You CAN trust yourself with food.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Full transparency, the alternative requires more work than the bandaid 'fix' of not keeping the food in the house. But the return on investment is more calm, more ease and more peace around food.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
P.S. On Tuesday 1st March I’m hosting a free live webinar:
Make Intuitive Eating Stick: How to Bridge the Gap Between Quitting Dieting, and Finding Peace with Food. I'm sharing:

Welcome to feel good eating

Hey there! I’m Nina Mills, a Dietitian and Intuitive Eating Counsellor who loves to work with people to figure out the HOW and WHY they eat, rather than telling them WHAT to eat.

As a former dieter myself, I know first-hand how frustrating diets can be. I even went back to university to study nutrition in the hope of unlocking the secrets to weight loss! But I have now spent over 10 years studying health and nutrition and have found I get the best results, and help people create the biggest transformations in their lives when we stop focusing on weight loss and instead look at ways to re-build a peaceful relationship with food and body using a non-diet approach.

I am here to help you reject diet culture, tune into your body's own inner wisdom about how to truly nourish yourself and ultimately feel good eating
