Reducing swelling is only one part of lymphoedema care, keeping it controlled between sessions is just as important.

After breast cancer treatment, fluid can build up in the arm, breast, chest wall or surrounding tissues. This may happen after lymph node removal, radiation, surgery, chemotherapy or a combination of treatments.

At Mornington Peninsula Lymphoedema Clinic, our lymphoedema practitioners use a combination of techniques to help reduce swelling, soften tissue and improve comfort and function. Treatment may include manual lymphatic drainage, compression therapy, intermittent pneumatic compression, photobiomodulation therapy and scar or soft tissue management where appropriate.

Once we have helped reduce the fluid load, the next step is maintaining those improvements between appointments. This is where a well-fitted compression garment becomes essential.

A compression garment helps to:

• support lymphatic flow
• reduce fluid build-up between sessions
• maintain limb and breast/chest wall improvements
• improve comfort and heaviness
• help prevent swelling from progressing

Compression needs to be carefully selected and fitted to suit the person, the area affected and the stage of swelling. For some patients, this may include an arm sleeve, glove, bra, vest, night garment or a combination of options.

Lymphoedema management is not one-size-fits-all. The right treatment plan and the right compression can make a significant difference.

MPLC is passionate about supporting patients after breast cancer treatment with evidence-based and patient centred lymphoedema care.

Breast Cancer - lymphoedema Prevention Focus

Have you had breast cancer treatment involving lymph node removal, radiotherapy, surgery or chemotherapy?

You may be at risk of developing lymphoedema, even years after cancer treatment.

At Mornington Peninsula Lymphoedema Clinic, we offer free SOZO screening scans to help identify early fluid changes before swelling becomes obvious.

After your scan, our lymphoedema practitioner will review your results. You will also receive information on what signs and symptoms to look out for.

If there are any concerns with your scan, we will be in touch.

You are also welcome to book a full appointment if you would like to learn more about your individual risk factors and how to reduce your risk of developing lymphoedema. Or address other potential concerns you have post cancer treatment including range of movement, scarring, fibrosis, self-care strategies and more.
