Flashback Friday 📸

A lot can change in 30 years. Who knew that our courtyard used to have a fountain?!

These photos from 1993 and 1994 show The Bays as it was then, when it was known as Mornington Bush Nursing Hospital (before becoming The Bays in 1997).

Swipe to see then and now. While the buildings have transformed and the service has grown over the decades, our purpose has stayed the same - caring for our community on the Mornington Peninsula.

We’ve welcomed generations of patients, families and staff through our doors, and it’s been a privilege to grow alongside the community we serve.

Do these photos bring back any memories? We’d love to hear them in the comments 💙

If you have old photos or stories from those early days, we’d love to see them - they may feature in a future Flashback Friday.

Last Thursday, we were honoured to host the inaugural meeting of the Oesophageal Cancer Survivorship Support Group at the Community Bank Mt Martha Wellness Centre, part of The Bays Cancer Care Centre.

It was a meaningful morning, bringing together people living after an oesophagectomy, along with carers and family members, to connect, share experiences, and spend time in a space where they are genuinely understood.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped shape what this group is becoming. From quiet conversations over morning tea to shared stories of resilience, the morning reflected exactly what this group has been created for - connection, understanding, and support at every stage of the journey.

A special thank you to local oesophageal and gastric surgeon, Dr Inoka De Silva, whose vision to establish this support group sparked the idea and helped bring it to life.

We would also like to acknowledge Jan Pulo, whose determination and lived experience as an oesophageal cancer survivor has been central to turning that vision into reality. Sincere thanks also to Lisa Atley for her support and care in helping organise the inaugural meeting.

This is only the beginning. We look forward to continuing to build a supportive, connected community for patients, carers and families affected by oesophageal cancer.

These meetings will be held on the second Thursday of every month from 10am. Please help us spread the word.

From two to three: a family’s journey on The Bays Giving Tree 🌿

Stephanie and Luke Genoni have updated their tribute on our beautiful Giving Tree art installation in the Maternity Ward to celebrate a very special milestone - all three of their children born at The Bays.

The family first purchased a leaf after the births of Milla (2021) and Louie (2023). They have now returned to add a third chapter following the arrival of their daughter, Letty Belle, born in October 2025.

To honour all three of their Bays-born children, their Giving Tree heart has been updated into a triple design.

“We were so pleased with our birth experiences at The Bays. The midwives were just amazing and the food was as good as a 5-star hotel. We share our Bays experience with all our friends who are looking to have children and recommend,” said Stephanie.

As a gesture of gratitude, the family chose to give back to support the hospital environment for future families, joining generations of babies born at The Bays since 1937.

We asked a number of people who’ve donated to our mid-year Vital Equipment Appeal why they decided to pass on the care, and this is what they said:

Robert was treated at The Bays Healthcare Group for kidney stones, during a time he describes as physically and emotionally difficult.

“The procedure and post-op care made me feel at ease during a time when I was very vulnerable and emotional,” he shared. “I saw and experienced compassion where none was expected and that was exactly what I needed to get through what was for me a difficult experience.”

That experience left a lasting impression on him, not just because of the medical treatment, but because of the humanity he felt throughout his care.

“With my small donation, if I can be a small part of ensuring that another person receives the same type of compassion in their hour of need, then that is the definition of passing on the care in my eyes.”

This June, your donation to the Vital Equipment Fund helps ensure that compassion is matched with the right equipment, so our teams can continue delivering exceptional care when it matters most.
