Anticipating external risks to community safety and privacy is a vital part of supporting vulnerable humans.

The Australian Government is officially transitioning to AusAlertโ€”a new, $132 million national emergency warning system utilizing advanced cell-broadcast technology. While designed to provide fast, life-saving notifications during natural disasters (like bushfires or floods) and public health crises, the upcoming mandatory system testing poses an immediate, severe risk to Domestic Violence (DV) victim-survivors who maintain hidden or backup safety phones.

Please review the comprehensive breakdown below to help integrate these critical updates into immediate safety planning.

๐Ÿ” The Tech Spec: Why 'AusAlert' Overrides Normal Settings
Unlike the older SMS-based alerts, AusAlert broadcasts directly to all compatible devices within a specific geographic radius.

The Override: During a "Critical" alert, the system bypasses any user settings. Even if a device is set to Silent, Do Not Disturb, or has no SIM card active, it will still trigger.

The Response: When the alert lands, the mobile device will vibrate violently, force the screen to turn on displaying a non-dismissible message, and play a loud, distinct siren-like sound for approximately 10 seconds.

The Display: Depending on the handset or operating system, the notification header may display as "AusAlert Test," "Presidential Alert," or "Extreme Threat Alert."

๐Ÿ“… The Testing Schedule (Mark Your Calendars)
The government is conducting localized trials this month to test regional and urban network grids, culminating in a massive nationwide test.

The Nationwide Test
๐Ÿ“ All of Australia: Monday 27 July 2026 at 2:00 PM AEST (1:30 PM ACST / 12:00 PM AWST). Approximately 90% of all active mobile phones in Australia will receive this simultaneous transmission.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Actionable Safety Planning: Vital Protocols to Share
If you are currently supporting clients navigating coercive control or abusive environments where a hidden phone is their lifeline, please share these critical protocol steps immediately:

Power Down Completely: Simply silencing the backup phone or turning the volume down will not work. The device must be powered completely OFF or placed strictly into Aeroplane Mode.

The 24-Hour Rule: Because network broadcast testing windows can slightly fluctuate, safety experts recommend putting hidden devices into Aeroplane Mode or powering them off at least 1 hour before the test, and leaving them off for a full 24 hours.

Turn On Away From Home: Advise individuals to wait until they are physically away from the perpetrator (e.g., at work, running errands, or in a public space) before turning the safety device back on, just in case a delayed broadcast or notification glitch triggers a sound.

Enact a Contingency Plan: Ensure clients have an emergency "go-bag" packed with essential documents, keys, and cash, and have a clear escape route rehearsed in the event a hidden device is accidentally discovered.

Hi! I think I am allowed to share my new business post (once?)
I have started a part time business assisting psychologists or allied health practitioners with their admin. It piles up when you are a sole trader! I am familiar with Halaxy and Splose software and have 5 years experience working with private and NDIS clients. I have no minimum hours, work virtually and offer a discount for newly registered psychs starting up ๐Ÿ™‚.

I live on the Peninsula, so happy to meet up for a coffee to chat about what you are seeking.

Reach out if you need assistance and a quote ๐ŸŒธ Paula
