This week at Effect Exercise & Rehabilitation, we’ve seen an increase in presentations of chronic low back pain, with many people experiencing nerve-related symptoms such as shooting pain, numbness, tingling and burning into the hips and legs.

Through comprehensive assessment and individualised, case-specific interventions, our multidisciplinary team is helping people manage their pain, improve function and get back to the activities they enjoy. 💙💚

If persistent back pain is limiting your everyday life, you don’t have to manage it alone.

Here is our client of the month! ⭐️

Well done!

Bob has been quietly working away in our balance class each week and has made improvements across the board. Bob is proving that consistency and dedication is key to maintaining physical wellbeing. It is a pleasure to have Bob in our balance class each week. 💪

“It’s a process that takes time and persistence. Keep challenging yourself and you’ll get there” - Bob

Pelvic floor symptoms during exercise? The answer is not always “just push through”.

In our recent team PD, Erin took us through an introduction to pelvic floor, breathing and pressure management during exercise.

Exercise prescription should respond to symptoms.

For some people, pelvic floor symptoms can show up as leaking, heaviness, pressure, discomfort, difficulty relaxing, or feeling like something is not quite right during movement.

That does not mean exercise is ‘bad’. It means we may need to adjust the exercise to suit the person.

This could include changing:
- Breathing
- Body Position
- Impact
- Load
- Range of movement
- Speed
- Rest time
- The way we cue the exercise

Sometimes a small change can make a movement feel much more manageable.

At Effect, our goal is to help people keep moving in a way that feels safe, confident & appropriate for their body.

Better learning as a team means better care for our clients! 💙💚

🧑‍⚕️ As a Physiotherapist currently completing a Master level course in Pain Management, these are three key learnings that have stood out to me so far ⬇️

- Pain is far more complex than most people realise, including myself.
Pain mechanisms are occuring at multiple levels, in the tissues, at the spinal cord and in the brain. We have to consider all levels to effectively manage pain.

- We focus to much on treating causes of pain and not enough on treating pain as its own condition
Chronic pain is a condition in its own right and can persist long after the original cause has resolved. Treating pain with specific pain management strategies is often far more effective than searching for an injury.

- Pain is closely linked with Mental Health
Pain pathways and emotional centres in the brain heavily overlap. Up to 70% of people living with chronic pain are also living with mental health conditions. It is important to consider and manage mental health conditions while adressing pain.

Ever heard of a DEXA scan before?

A DEXA scan is a quick, painless scan that measures your bone density. It helps identify whether your bones are normal, showing signs of osteopenia, or have progressed to osteoporosis. This matters because osteoporosis is often silent.

Many people do not know their bones are weaker until they have a fracture.

A DEXA scan gives you and your doctor a baseline, helps estimate fracture risk, and can track whether treatment, exercise and lifestyle changes are helping over time. Exercise Physiologists will use this as a long term measure of someone’s success with an exercise program targeting bone mass 💪

If you’re over 50, have had low-trauma fracture, take long term steroid medication, or have risk factors for osteoporosis you may be eligible for a rebate so talk to your GP 🧑‍⚕️
