peoples as the First Peoples of Australia.

We acknowledge that the land on which our local health network
delivers health care services are the Traditional Lands for the Kaurna, Ngadjuri, Peramangk and Ngarrindjeri /
Ramindjeri Peoples. We acknowledge that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a deep connection with their Land,
Water and Communities. This is central to their cultural, spiritual, social, physical and emotional identity. We honour and pay our respects to all generations of the Kaurna, Ngadjuri, Peramangk, and Ngarrindjeri /
Ramindjeri people. In particular, we honour and pay our respects to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders
past, present, and emerging. ABOUT US
Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network (BHFLHN) came into being on 1 July 2019 as part of the state-wide
governance reform. BHFLHN delivers a range of in-hospital, aged care, community, disability, and mental health services through public hospitals and other health and aged care service sites located at Gawler, Angaston, Tanunda, Eudunda, Kapunda, Mount Pleasant, Gumeracha, Mount Barker, Strathalbyn, Victor Harbor and Kangaroo Island. BHFLHN is governed by a Governing Board, reporting to the Minister for Health and Wellbeing, with its functions defined in the Health Care (Governance) Act 2018. We oversee country-wide mental health services through the Rural and Remote Mental Health Service, based
at Glenside, and the state-wide borderline personality disorder service, BPD Co. We also host the Rural Support
Service, which supports all six regional local health networks across the state with a focus on improving quality
and safety. As at November 2021, the overall BHFLHN workforce, including the Rural Support Service, was approximately 2,500 (1,100 full time equivalent). Further to this, there are approximately 450-500 individual general practitioners and medical specialists working in partnership with us and / or providing services through our sites. Many of the sites through which we deliver services hold special historical significance for our communities. Several of our hospitals were initially built as war memorials with community donations and as a result, there is a continued sense of community ownership and connection to them. BHFLHN is unique in Australia in that it completely encapsulates the land borders of all the Adelaide metropolitan local health networks. BHFLHN provides services to the largest population group of all regional local health networks in South Australia, home to 11.9% of the South Australian population and 41% of the regional South Australian population. 🎉 Celebrating 3 Years of the Gumeracha Nurse-Led Clinic 🎉

What began as a new model of care has grown into a trusted service supporting the BHFLHN community. Over the past three years, our clinic has supported people to access timely, high-quality healthcare closer to home, including care for minor illness and injury and wound management.

We are incredibly proud of the care, compassion and innovation our team brings every day. A huge thank you to our dedicated staff, past and present, along with our local health service partners and community networks who help make this service possible.

Most importantly, we are grateful for the trust our patients and community have placed in us. Thank you to everyone who has walked through our doors over the past three years — we're proud to be part of your healthcare journey. 💙
Here's to the next chapter of accessible, high-quality care for our community.

💙 Did you know?

Approximately 2.4 in every 1,000 Australians live with schizophrenia — a complex mental health condition that can affect physical health, relationships, education, employment and social connection.

Sunday 24 May marked World Schizophrenia Awareness Day, an important opportunity to continue building understanding of schizophrenia and related psychotic illnesses. 💙

For people living in rural and remote communities, accessing care can be more challenging due to distance, workforce shortages and limited local services. That’s why compassionate, coordinated care is so important. 🤝

The Rural and Remote Mental Health Service (RRMHS) provides specialist, recovery-oriented care for rural and remote South Australians, including:
✔️ access to treatment, including clozapine, for people with complex needs
✔️ early intervention for young people experiencing first episode psychosis
✔️ multidisciplinary teams delivering care face-to-face and via telehealth.

We also recognise the vital role families and carers play in supporting recovery and wellbeing.

Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network (BHFLHN) is proud to host this statewide service, helping deliver care closer to home for South Australians.

Mount Barker Hospital car park update 🏥🚗

We’re pleased to share the great news for our community. The new Mount Barker Hospital car park will be FREE for patients, visitors and staff once construction is completed in July.

The upgrade will significantly increase capacity, expanding from 431 to 645 parking bays, making it easier for everyone to access the hospital.

This improved parking area will help make hospital visits easier, more convenient, and more accessible for our community.

We look forward to sharing updates on when the car park will open in the coming months.

🖤💛❤️ This week, Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network joins communities across Australia in recognising National Reconciliation Week (NRW), 27 May – 3 June.

The 2026 theme, “All In”, is a call for all of us to take an active role in reconciliation, not just this week, but every day. It reminds us that meaningful change happens when we step forward, take responsibility and work together.

For Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network (BHFLHN), being All In means continuing to build a health service in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples (First Nations peoples) feel respected, safe, heard, and valued. It means listening and learning, strengthening cultural safety, challenging racism, and building stronger relationships within our communities.

Across our network, this commitment comes to life through , our Aboriginal Health movement that creates space to elevate Aboriginal voices, experiences and perspectives. While has a strong focus alongside NAIDOC Week, it is now a year-round commitment at BHFLHN, supporting ongoing learning, connection and culturally safe practice across our services.

During National Reconciliation Week, staff across BHFLHN are taking part in a range of internal activities, including a NRW livestream event at Gawler and Mount Barker, lunchtime screenings at Southern Fleurieu Health Service, a self-guided Walk on Country, and visits to the Wangka Walytja Exhibition at the South Australian Museum

🤝 Together, we all have a role to play. See images below from last year's events in Gawler and Mount Barker.

🏆👏 Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network (BHFLHN) is proud to recognise the achievement of Amanda Stokes, Nurse Unit Manager of the CARE team, and Lisa Fidock, Director of Nursing, Care of the Older Person, who are recent recipients of the 2027 Premier’s Nursing and Midwifery Scholarships.

This scholarship supports nurses and midwives in undertaking international study tours to explore best practice and bring new ideas back to improve care across South Australia. 🌍

In September, Amanda and Lisa will travel together to The Hogeweyk (The Netherlands), an internationally recognised leader in innovative dementia care. Over 12 days, they will take part in guided tours, observations and discussions, learning from both organisational leaders and frontline staff.

The Hogeweyk’s unique, purpose-built village is centred on a Be@Home philosophy, promoting autonomy, identity, social connection and quality of life for people living with advanced dementia through everyday living rather than institutional care. 🏡💙

Amanda and Lisa’s shared commitment to improving aged care will bring valuable insights back to BHFLHN, helping further enhance the experience and quality of life for residents across our aged care services.

Congratulations to Amanda and Lisa on this outstanding achievement. We look forward to sharing highlights from their trip later this year.

This week is National Volunteer Week (18 – 24 May), and we’re celebrating the incredible volunteers who help connect our communities across Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network and recognising the difference they make every day.

We’re excited to welcome back the Volunteer Wards Program at Gawler Health Service, bringing comfort, companionship and practical support to patients and staff.

Our volunteers provide a friendly face and a listening ear, while assisting with everyday tasks such as:
• assisting with meals
• filling water jugs
• tidying overbed tables
• refreshing flowers
• spending time with patients who may not have visitors

These small acts make a big difference, allowing nursing staff to focus on clinical care while ensuring patients feel supported, comfortable and connected. Many patients have already shared that volunteer visits are a highlight of their day.

We are currently looking for more volunteers to help cover morning and afternoon shifts across the week. Acts of kindness extend beyond the wards, with groups like the Gawler Knit and Natter group creating handmade items that bring warmth and comfort to patients.

Why volunteer with BHFLHN?
• Give back to your community
• Meet new people and build skills
• Be part of a valued and supportive team

With opportunities across the Barossa, Adelaide Hills, Southern Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island, there’s a role for everyone. 👉 Get involved and help us create a place of care, kindness and connection: health.sa.gov.au/volunteerBHFLHN

Thank you to all our volunteers for the difference you make. 💙 📸 See images of our volunteers in action.

🔬 International Clinical Trials Day | 20 May

Today we recognise the vital role clinical trials and research play in improving healthcare outcomes and expanding access to high quality care.

At Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network (BHFLHN), we are building a strong and sustainable research culture that brings research closer to home for our communities. Research is a key part of how we improve patient outcomes, strengthen workforce capability and ensure people in regional areas have access to the same opportunities as those in metropolitan settings.

Our growing research and Teletrial program is focused on delivering high-quality, accessible care through research and innovation, enabling clinical trials closer to home, and translating evidence into everyday clinical practice.

Research at BHFLHN by the numbers:
• 26 active research projects
• 13 projects in the pipeline
• 6 projects approved year-to-date
• 3 clinical trials, including teletrial activity
• 100% achievement of research governance KPIs

Current projects helping shape regional healthcare include:
🔹 SWIFT Teletrial – enabling regional haemodialysis patients to participate in a national trial closer to home
🔹 CARe-Med study – improving medication prescribing and patient outcomes
🔹 RART-Bronch trial (in development) – improving bronchiolitis care in regional hospitals.

“Research is a critical part of how we improve care, strengthen our workforce, and ensure equitable access to high quality services for our regional communities. At BHFLHN, we are committed to embedding research into everyday practice and supporting our staff to be actively involved in shaping the future of care.”
– Dr Sharon Morton, Executive Director Medical Services, BHFLHN

Through strong partnerships and collaboration, we are helping shape the future of regional healthcare.

World Facilities Management Day was recognised last week on 13 May 2026.

Our Facilities staff play a vital role in keeping our buildings, grounds, assets and environments safe, welcoming and well maintained.

Much of their work happens quietly behind the scenes, but it is essential to the smooth running of our services.

Next time you see someone responding to a maintenance request or caring for our sites, please say hello or offer a smile. It’s a simple way to recognise and value the important work they do across BHFLHN.

Thank you to all our Facilities staff.

Last week, we celebrated our incredible dietitian team and the valuable role they play across our regional communities. 🥗🍣🍉

With more than 20 dietitians and dietitian assistants working across Gawler and Barossa, Adelaide Hills, Southern Fleurieu, and Kangaroo Island, our team provides expert care in hospitals, aged care, community outpatient services, child health and development, and project and leadership roles.

Dietitians work closely with other health professionals to deliver coordinated, evidence-based nutrition care. They support patients and clients with practical, achievable dietary advice and develop personalised nutrition plans that help improve long-term health outcomes.

This year’s theme, “Celebrating our collective impact”, reflects the many ways our team makes a difference every day. Throughout the week, they actively raised awareness by:
• delivering staff education sessions
• hosting afternoon teas
• organising quizzes and activities
• sharing team profiles
• displaying posters across sites

Thank you to our dietetics team for the care, knowledge, and support you provide to our communities every day. We encourage everyone to take a moment to recognise the dedication and meaningful impact of our dietitians.

Check out Dietitians Week activities in action across our sites.
