EXPERIENCED SUPPORT WORKERS
SIL HOUSES
Mount Barker, Littlehampton and Strathalbyn

The Avoca Group is growing again and
We need more amazing staff.

We currently have Supported Independent Living (SIL) homes located throughout the Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu, and with two new homes coming online, we are looking to expand our experienced team.

We are currently seeking:

• Experienced Support Workers with Complex and High Intensity Skill Sets

These roles involve supporting participants within SIL homes and include day shifts, passive/sleepover shifts, weekends, and ongoing rosters

While we understand that many support workers work across multiple jobs, we are looking for people who want regular rostered hours and are willing to commit to The Avoca Group and fantastic participants who we have the privilege to support.

We are looking for a team who have capacity to work over a 24/7 roster which includes passive nights and weekends

We are happy to offer permanent positions to attract the right people; however, if casual employment suits you better, have a chat to us.

We are looking for people who:

• Are reliable and dependable
• Have strong communication and teamwork skills
• Can work independently and use initiative
• Excellent critical thinking skills
• Understand that person-centred care is more than just a buzzword

If you are reading this and feel this role suits you, we would love to hear from you.

Desirable :
• Certificate III or IV in Disability, Individual Support, Mental Health or similar
• Experience working within SIL environments

Essential

• NDIS Worker Check
• Working With Children Check
• First Aid & CPR
• Driver’s Licence

Short-Term Respite

Short-Term Accommodation (STA) was previously an NDIS-funded support.

In October 2025, the NDIS removed STA and now offers Short-Term Respite

Who is Short-Term Respite for?
STR will usually only be funded for NDIS participants who:

Need more than 6 hours/day of informal support
Don’t get more than 18 hours/day of formal support
Don’t live alone
Are not funded to live in Supported Independent Living (SIL) or Individualised Living Options (ILO) arrangements

What can Short-Term Respite be used for?
With the change from STA to STR in October 2025, the NDIS restricted the ways STR can be used. Since this change, STR can usually only be used for:

Up to 14 days at a time, and 28 days in a year
‘Standard’ accommodation for you – and for an support worker if you need one – in a place like a motel, short stay rental, cabin, cottage, hostel, or respite accommodation that is accessible to you
Similar support to the support you normally get at home

Accommodation and support in your home state/territory.

STR can be used to pay for reasonable expenses during your time away from home, including the accommodation itself, assistance with self-care and community access. STR may also cover food and certain other expenses in centre-based respite. STR is included in the flexible Core Budget of your NDIS plan.

STR may be used to get paid support workers to support you in your home, while your informal support people have a break.

What can't Short-Term Respite be used for?
STR can’t usually be used to pay for:

Long-term respite
Crisis accommodation
An interstate or overseas holiday, a cruise, or a tour
Accommodation that includes features that you don’t have at home – for example, therapy pools, entertainment options or luxury features
Building your independent living skills
Trialling a new long-term

Differences between STR and Medium-Term Accommodation

Medium-Term Accommodation (MTA) is another type of NDIS funding that may be used to pay for a temporary home for you while you can’t live in your usual home. MTA is usually funded for up to 90 days, and is usually only funded if you know where you are going to live long-term.

The Avoca Groups Home & Living Specialist Team can work with you to find a home and support outcome that suits your access needs and lifestyle.

Today (Friday, 9-Jan-2026) is a day of EXTREME Bushfire Danger and a TOTAL FIRE BAN in the Adelaide Hills.

On a day like today:
* These are very hot, dry and windy conditions for a bush or grass fire.
* If a fire starts and takes hold, it will be unpredictable, move very fast and very difficult for fire fighters to bring under control.
* Spot fires will start and move quickly. Embers may come from many directions.
* Homes that are prepared to the highest level, have been constructed to bushfire protection levels and are actively defended may provide safety.
* You must be physically and mentally prepared to defend in these conditions.
* The safest place to be is away from bushfire prone areas.

What you should do:
* Only stay with your property if you are prepared to the highest level. This means your home needs to have been constructed to bushfire protection levels e.g.; enclosed eaves, covers over external air conditioners, metal flyscreens etc.
* You must be well prepared and able to actively defend your home if a fire starts. This means you have the right equipment and resources to put out fires around your home e.g.; enough water supply, petrol/diesel portable pump, generator, protective clothing etc.
* If you are not prepared to the highest level, leaving bushfire prone areas early in the day is your safest

Extreme heat can make you feel unwell and may lead to dangerous heat-related illnesses. Symptoms of heat-related illnesses include dizziness, headaches, nausea, thirst, or vomiting.

To stay safe, drink plenty of water and avoid going outside during the hottest parts of the day. Check in on loved ones regularly, especially older adults and pregnant people. Keep cool indoors with a fan or air-conditioner.

Remember to wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and, if you’re going outside, wear a hat, sunglasses and plenty of SPF 50+ sunscreen.
