Not as scary as you may think.

Compost is the cornerstone to your garden success. You can compost almost any organic materials.

Things to put in your compost-
Vegetable peelings and food scraps
Weeds
Straw
Manure
Old leaves
Sawdust

Things to avoid- (generally)
Meat
dairy
Processed foods
Onions
Citrus
*These things can be composted but it's a bit more intensive and needs to be a hot compost.

For the beginning gardener it's easy to start a basic compost pile. Firstly pick a good spot that is not too far out of the way, otherwise it's easy to forget about it.

Make sure the spot you choose gets mostly full sun throughout the day.

Start by layering your ingredients, as a general rule it's 50/50 green to brown.

Green means vegetable scraps, grass clippings, weeds and manure (nitrogen)

Brown is straw, dry leaves etc. (Carbon)

Layer these things together and leave it for a couple of weeks giving it a bit of water a couple times a week.

Then start to turn it over once a week and you will soon have beautiful compost to feed your soil.

All throughout our garden beds we have peas growing from the pea straw we've been using.

This is actually a really good thing, as all peas and legumes are nitrogen fixing, so they add nitrogen to the soil as they grow and when they die off or fall down they make great mulch or compost addition.

Our soil is sandy and depleted so we are addressing that in a few ways, by making our own compost, growing cover crops, using the chop and drop technique, hugelkultures and lots of mulch.

Growing food is something everyone can do, even if its just a little patch or pots of herbs 🌱🌱

Here in the video you can see some of the seedlings we've put in growing really nicely and the beginnings of our first Hugelkulture.

We've been busy working on the new gardens
Check it out!
Hugelkulture beds are going in.
We have mostly sandy and depleted soil, being near the coast and the river but there are plenty of materials around to build up the growing areas.
Starting a garden is one of the best things you can do right now, just start small and let it grow 🌱🌿

Creating a garden can be a really fun and rewarding experience for the whole family.
