GPs play an important role in identifying ADHD and making referrals. However, psychologists have specialised training in psychological assessment and can conduct comprehensive evaluations using clinical interviews, standardised assessment tools, developmental history, and behavioural questionnaires.

A psychological assessment provides a detailed understanding of how ADHD symptoms affect daily functioning and may also identify other factors that could be contributing to difficulties.

It’s important to note that psychologists do not prescribe medication. If medication is being considered, a psychiatrist is typically required for diagnosis confirmation and prescribing.
