Body and Soul recently interviewed ESSA’s Chief Exercise Physiologist, Nick Edwards, about how exercise can make a difference to your energy levels.

“Just trying to be active in as many ways as you can throughout the day, it all adds up,” says Edwards. “Every time you get an annoying email, go for a little walk around the office. Do some sit and stands up and down in the chair, a few turns and twists and a bit of movement.”

“If our muscles are really strong, if our heart and lungs are strong and fit, every part of the day that’s wearing us down is going to have a little bit less of an effect, our bodies will be a little bit stronger and more resilient towards these things,” explains Edwards.

Exercise can help reduce your risk of breast cancer

Exercise is one of the most powerful risk factors you can control, and it is never too late to start

Women who do large amounts of vigorous physical activity have around 17% lower risk of premenopausal breast cancer and around 10% lower risk of postmenopausal breast cancer

Aim for at least 30 mins of exercise, five times a week.

If you’d like support, an Accredited Exercise Physiologist or Accredited Exercise Scientist can guide you with safe, personalised and evidence-based advice.

She also notes that many men over 50 have spent years in physically demanding jobs and may not have prioritised structured exercise outside of work. Pilates can help rebuild movement quality, improve strength and support long term physical health.
