Happy 21st anniversary to Nat, our Director of Operations (and official heart & soul of IRS)! ♥️

Nat's had an amazing journey at IRS, from Senior Occupational Therapist to Director of Operations with 3 other leadership roles in between, she now steers our ship through the stormy waters of the sector with a unified vision for our organisation.

Meet Georgia 👋

Georgia began her career at IRS as a new grad and after some invaluable experience in the NT, she is excited to return to the IRS Fam. As an OT, Georgia highly values understanding the lived experience of her clients and finding out what is most important to them, when working collaboratively to achieve their goals.

After getting two years into a business degree at university I knew I needed to pursue a career that felt more meaningful to me, where I could help other people and truly feel like I was making a difference in people's lives. I stumbled across OT and have never looked back.

Helping a gentleman with a progressive neurological condition transition into long-term supported independent living following a very long hospital stay. It was a mammoth team effort to organise complex equipment and home care, but very rewarding to see the client enjoy family visits in his own space.

A Q&A with Amy:

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿?
I can't recall the exact moment I first heard of speech pathology, but I was completely sold when I learned it combined language, psychology, and diverse communication methods. Speech pathology is a fun blend of language, science, and theory!

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝟯 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲?
♥️ The diverse range of practice within the field itself- from infancy to palliative care, there is an opportunity to contribute to and collaborate with every stage or milestone of life.
♥️ I love working with neurological conditions and building functional communication skills. Again, a fun blend of psychology and the science of communication!
♥️ Working in a multidisciplinary team offers a great collaborative approach to helping clients holistically, which keeps the job interesting with an open mind and broadens my perspective beyond the typical scope of speech pathology.

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝟯 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸?
1) Painting and drawing to wind down for the day - whether it's a small doodle or an awful attempt at painting a flower!
2) Turning old closet findings into my next outfit with some amateur sewing and cutting while watching a show or movie.
3) Visiting a new cafe or restaurant wherever social media takes me to eat yummy food and sip on refreshing drinks.

It's Speech Pathology Week 2026:

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 every day for the clients we work with at Independent Rehabilitation Services.
From training job interview skills to learning the sounds to again say the names of family members, Speech Pathologists look for new ways our clients can belong, learn, connect and choose through communication.

The theme for this Brain Injury Awareness Week - 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘗𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴, 𝘖𝘯𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 - speaks directly to the heart of what we do. Working alongside our clients in the community every day, we see firsthand the incredible strength and resilience of every individual navigating life after a brain injury.

In Australia, around 1 in 45 people live with a brain injury - and nearly 3 in 4 are under 65. Whether caused by an accident, illness, stroke or sport, it can happen to anyone, at any time.

Because the majority of the people we support live with brain injury, this theme is deeply personal to our team. Whether you are a participant, family member, carer or health professional, we all play a vital role in building inclusive, connected spaces where people are empowered to live meaningful lives.

𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗷'𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆: 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀

Following a severe stroke in 2022, Manoj looked at his recovery through the lens of his lifelong character traits: strength, motivation and discipline. Knowing the only way forward was to "𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦, 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦, 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦," he committed to a rigorous daily routine.

His sheer dedication has led to incredible milestones: completing 5km Parkruns, riding his bike into the city and volunteering three days a week at a local Op Shop to put his speech into real-world practice.

Throughout it all, Manoj’s beaming smile and positive outlook continue to inspire everyone around him.
