When we're stressed it's common to take quicker, and more shallow breaths. Over time, spending hours in a slouched position can also make it harder for your rib cage and diaphragm to move freely, encouraging a more shallow breathing pattern.

Interestingly, the relationship works both ways. Stress can change the way you breathe, and your breathing pattern can also influence how your body regulates its stress response.

This is one reason chiropractors assess more than just your spine. We also consider your posture, rib movement and breathing mechanics to better understand how your body moves and functions as a whole.

Babies and children are constantly growing, learning and adapting to the world around them. From tummy time and crawling to starting school and playing sport, every stage brings new physical and sensory experiences.

Simple things like quality sleep, regular movement, play, cuddles and predictable routines can all help support your child's developing nervous system and overall wellbeing.

This is why chiropractors take a holistic approach. We don't just look at the spine - we consider your child's movement, posture, developmental milestones and everyday habits to better understand how they're growing and functioning.

🤭 Try this fun proprioception test at home!
- Place a marker on the floor (or line yourself up with an object in front of you)
- Close your eyes and march on the spot for 30 seconds.
- When you open your eyes... have you drifted away from where you started? 👀

What does proprioception have to do with your spine? 🧠

Proprioception is your body's ability to sense where it is in space.

Your spine contains thousands of sensory receptors that constantly send information to your brain about your body's position and movement. Your nervous system uses this information to help coordinate your balance and everyday movement.

The clearer this communication, the better your brain can understand where your body is and how it's moving.

A regulated nervous system is better able to receive, process and respond to the sensory information your body is constantly sending it. ⭐️

Your structure is your body's physical framework (your joints, muscles, posture and the way you move.)

Your state is how your body is functioning on any given day. Things like stress, sleep, recovery, physical workload and daily habits can all influence muscle tension, movement and how your body feels.

Both matter! This is why chiropractors don't just assess your spine - we also ask about your lifestyle, work, sleep and daily routines to better understand the bigger picture of your health and movement. 💪

Yep! 🫡

Your thoracic spine (mid-back) is the bridge between your neck, ribs and lower back. It plays an important role in posture, breathing mechanics, shoulder movement and how your body rotates during everyday activities.

When your mid-back is not moving well, other areas of your body may need to compensate to keep you moving, you might notice things like:

Stiffness when rotating:
Turning to check your blind spot, reaching behind you or twisting during exercise may feel more restricted.

Posture changes:
Spending long periods sitting may feel more demanding, especially through your upper back, neck and shoulders.

Shoulder movement limitations:
Your shoulders rely on the thoracic spine for a stable base during reaching and overhead movements.

Changes in breathing mechanics:
Because the ribs attach to the thoracic spine, movement through this area contributes to how your rib cage expands during breathing.

Understanding your thoracic spine is one piece of the bigger picture when it comes to healthy movement and function.
