Getting out and belonging somewhere are not the same thing.

A different outing every week is activity. Returning to the same group often enough that people know your name is connection — and that's what actually reduces isolation.

A good support worker starts from what you already like, plans so the outing goes smoothly, and then steps back as you get comfortable. The goal is that you need them there less, not more.

Under 65, the NDIS pays for occupational therapy and physio at home. From 65, it's the Support at Home program — where clinical care like allied health carries no participant contribution.

Same therapist, same work in the same lounge room, two completely different systems behind it. And if you're already on the NDIS when you turn 65, you get a choice worth understanding before you make it.

A cleaning roster and an independence plan can look identical on paper. The difference is whether tasks are done *with* you or *for* you.

A schedule builds skills when the same worker comes each week, heavy jobs are batched on set days, and there's a flexible block for whatever comes up.

Our guide includes a sample weekly table you can adapt, and the wording to get it into your service agreement so it actually happens.

Waiting on a GP referral before you can start NDIS therapy? You probably don't need one.

The NDIS doesn't require a referral for occupational therapy or physio. What actually slows things down is a referral missing the information a provider needs to say yes.

We've listed exactly what to send the first time, what quietly holds things up, and what to do differently if the person is over 65: https://sesi.com.au/blog/how-to-get-a-fast-ot-or-physio-referral-in-victoria/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=blog-sprint-2026

Domestic assistance is help with cleaning, laundry, meals and shopping. It is not a cure-all, and we'd rather say so.

What it genuinely changes: energy freed up for things that matter, a home that's safer to move around, meals that actually happen, and pressure lifted off a family carer.

What it can't do: fix loneliness on its own, replace therapy or nursing — and done badly, it can leave someone doing less for themselves, not more. Good domestic assistance is done *with* you where it can be.

Getting out — a class, a club, a swim, a coffee with a friend — is a funded support, not a luxury.

For NDIS participants, a support worker's time to go with you comes from your Core budget. For older Victorians on Support at Home, social support sits in the independence category. And there's a lot in Victoria that costs little or nothing on top: neighbourhood houses, U3A, libraries, council programs, and the Companion Card for the person who comes with you.

How to set it up: https://sesi.com.au/blog/community-participation-programs-for-older-adults-ndis-and-support-at-home/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=blog-sprint-2026

It's 7am, the shower shift was booked, and nobody has turned up. What now?

Workers get sick. The difference between a wobble and a crisis is whether there was a plan.

Tell your provider in writing which supports can be moved and which cannot — personal care, medication prompting, transfers and meals usually cannot. Ask for the on-call number now, before you need it. And if essential support is repeatedly missed, that's a safety issue you can raise with the NDIS Commission on 1800 035 544.

A community nurse can come to your home for wound care, medication management, catheter and continence care, and help managing a chronic condition — so you're not going to a clinic or sitting in an emergency department for it.

For NDIS participants, it's usually funded from your Core budget when the need relates to your disability. For older Australians on Support at Home, clinical care like nursing has no participant contribution at all.

Here's what community nursing actually covers, and how to arrange it: https://sesi.com.au/blog/what-community-nursing-at-home-covers-ndis-and-support-at-home/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=blog-sprint-2026

One familiar face, or a small team? It's one of the first real decisions families make — and both answers have a cost.

A worker who learns your routine builds trust and notices small changes early. But if they're sick, on leave or move on, one person means no cover.

The honest middle ground is a small, consistent team who all know your routine, backed by a written support plan so a fill-in isn't starting from scratch. No provider can truthfully promise the same person forever — and you should be wary of one that does.

You don't need a GP referral to have an occupational therapist or physio come to your home under the NDIS.

If your plan has Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living funding, you can ring a provider today. The hold-up is almost never approval — it's finding someone with capacity.

Our guide covers which budget pays, what a visit costs in 2026–27, how long it takes to get started, and what to do if your plan has no therapy funding at all: https://sesi.com.au/blog/how-to-access-in-home-allied-health-under-the-ndis-in-victoria/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=blog-sprint-2026
