Pain is part of your nervous system's protection system. When your brain concludes that your body may be in danger, it can produce pain, tighten muscles, restrict movement and make an activity feel difficult or unsafe.
The purpose is to change your behaviour-to make you slow down, withdraw, guard the area or stop, before further harm occurs.
When there is genuine, immediate danger, this response is essential.
If you place your hand on a hot stove, pain makes you pull it away before the burn
becomes more serious.
However the brain doesn't assess danger using tissue information alone.
It also considers your previous injuries, pain experiences, fears, beliefs, surroundings and expectations.
It remembers what has happened before and uses that history to predict what might happen next.
Sometimes it gets the prediction wrong.
Imagine you once badly hurt your back while bending down to lift a heavy box.
The pain was sudden and frightening and you couldn’t move comfortably for several days.
Months later, the injury has healed however when you bend down to pick up a light bag of groceries your nervous system remembers what happened last time and it may produce pain, spasm your back and make you immediately straighten up, even though the current movement and load are not causing new damage.
The pain is completely real, your nervous system is simply using your history to protect you from what it believes could be another threat- this is what I believe specialists mean when they say “the pain is all in your head.”
However what they should explain is that your pain is absolutely real, however it is the brain’s protective response after interpreting information from your body, your environment and your previous experiences and deciding that you may be in danger.
Think of pain like a smoke alarm.
It should scream when the house is on fire-however a sensitive alarm may also scream when you burn the toast.
There is smoke, and the alarm is real, however the house is not necessarily burning down.
This is why repeatedly exercising until pain forces you to stop can be unhelpful.
It teaches the nervous system, "This activity always ends in
danger."
Forcing your way through significant pain may reinforce the same message, creating a cycle of doing too much, flaring up, resting completely and then starting again.
Instead, use the Goldilocks Principle-not too much, not too little, but just right.
The aim is not to ignore every pain signal or assume pain never indicates injury.
New, severe or unexplained pain should be appropriately assessed.
The aim is to help an overprotective nervous system become better at distinguishing between a genuine car break-in and a leaf just landing on the car’s window.
You are not proving how much pain you can tolerate.
You are building trust,
confidence and physical capacity-one safe, successful experience at a time.
