Are you a young person on the autism spectrum?

Young adults on the autism spectrum are at four-fold risk of developing mental health problems such as depression and anxiety with more research needed into everyday real time changes to their mental health.

The study by Deakin University (Melbourne) is seeking 50 young adults (18-30 years old) on the autism spectrum to fill out a battery of several online assessments as well as use our youth-friendly app for a period of 15 days to record daily emotional changes.

Participants will be reimbursed $60 (AUD).

Strategies to reduce autistic burnouts.

There are a few strategies to help reduce or prevent autistic burnouts, and both the autistic person and those around them play an essential role.
An important strategy is to allow time not to mask and camouflage. This includes allowing yourself to engage with others in a comfortable manner, not a persona or social script you may feel needs to be followed every time.
Another key strategy is to know yourself and be aware of your limits and accept these limits and engage in self-compassion. Know situations that are likely to trigger the onset of burnout, watch for signs you may experience and feel, and where possible, remove yourself or schedule breaks. This may include leaving a social event early, scheduling recovery time to recharge, such as spending time in nature, drawing, listening to music, or engaging in hobbies that you enjoy and find soothing and relaxing. As difficult as it may seem, try to reduce expectations and demands and learn to say ‘no’, where possible, remember ‘sometimes less is more’.
