Passionflower: when the nervous system needs help finding the brakes.

Passiflora incarnata has a long history of use for nervous tension, restlessness and sleep disturbance — and its effects may be partly explained by its influence on GABAergic signalling.

GABA is the brain’s major inhibitory neurotransmitter, helping regulate neuronal excitability and allowing the nervous system to shift out of heightened arousal.

Passionflower may be particularly useful when stress shows up as:

• feeling wired but tired
• difficulty switching off
• nervous tension
• mental restlessness
• disrupted sleep

The interesting part? Calming the nervous system isn’t necessarily about sedation. It’s about supporting the mechanisms that help the brain regulate excitation and return to a more settled state.

Time in nature can influence the biology of stress. Exposure to green space has been associated with lower cortisol and sympathetic arousal, alongside shifts in neurotransmitter systems involved in mood, attention and wellbeing — including serotonin, dopamine, GABA and endogenous opioids such as endorphins.

Natural light also helps regulate melatonin and the circadian system, supporting the timing of sleep, alertness and hormonal rhythms.

Add movement and fresh air, and you’re giving the brain and body multiple signals that can support autonomic regulation, recovery and psychological restoration.

Midlife weight changes are rarely about one thing.

As hormones shift through menopause, the foundations matter more: how we nourish ourselves, how much muscle we maintain, how well we sleep and recover, and the environment our body is exposed to.

Protein, fibre and nutrient-dense food support metabolic health. Resistance training helps preserve muscle and insulin sensitivity. Sleep and recovery influence appetite, glucose regulation and energy. Environmental exposures also form part of the wider health picture.

WHY IS MY WAIST CHANGING IN MIDLIFE?

Because it’s not just hormones.

Your waist is an outcome of multiple systems interacting and midlife can shift several of them at once.

Hormonal changes can alter where fat is stored, particularly around the abdomen.

Chronic stress matters. Cortisol and adrenaline influence blood glucose, insulin, appetite, sleep and recovery. When stress becomes persistent, those metabolic effects can make maintaining body composition considerably harder.

Insulin sensitivity can decline, increasing the tendency toward central fat accumulation.

Muscle can decline with age, hormonal change and inactivity. Less muscle means less metabolically active tissue and reduced capacity for glucose disposal.

Sleep disruption affects cortisol, insulin sensitivity and the appetite-regulating hormones leptin and ghrelin.

Nutrition matters: inadequate protein, micronutrient deficiencies, excess energy intake, alcohol and poor diet quality can all influence body composition.

Movement matters: resistance training, daily activity and adequate recovery help preserve muscle and metabolic function.

Environment matters too. Mould, pollutants and other environmental exposures can contribute to inflammatory and physiological stress in susceptible people.

And yes, energy balance still matters. Body fat cannot increase indefinitely without an energy surplus. But why energy intake, expenditure, appetite, activity and fat distribution have changed is where the useful clinical question begins.

So instead of asking only:

“How do I lose my belly?”

Ask:

What is driving the change?

Hormones. Stress. Insulin. Muscle. Sleep. Nutrition. Movement. Environment. Recovery.

Why is my waist changing when I haven’t changed that much?

That is one of the most common questions I hear from women in midlife.

Because your waistline is an outcome - not the whole problem.

Oestrogen shifts can change where fat is stored.
Insulin resistance can favour central fat accumulation.
Chronic stress and disrupted cortisol signalling can affect appetite, glucose regulation and sleep.
Loss of muscle reduces one of your biggest metabolic assets.
Poor sleep can disrupt leptin and ghrelin - the signals involved in hunger and satiety.
Thyroid function influences energy expenditure.
Low protein, nutritional deficiencies, inactivity, alcohol and inadequate hydration can compound the picture.
And environmental exposures - including mould in susceptible people - may contribute to inflammatory burden and metabolic disruption.

So simply eating less and exercising harder can miss what is actually driving the change.

Midlife requires a wider lens: hormones, metabolism, muscle, nutrition, stress, sleep, movement, recovery and environment.

Your body is giving you information.

WHY DO OATS KEEP YOU FULLER FOR LONGER?

The key is β-glucan — the soluble fibre naturally found in oats.

In the gut, β-glucan absorbs water and forms a viscous gel. That slows gastric emptying and carbohydrate absorption, helping the meal stay with you for longer.

That can support:

* steadier post-meal glucose
* slower digestion
* longer-lasting satiety
* greater fullness between meals

For a more filling meal, combine oats with:

protein + nuts or seeds + berries

That gives you fibre, protein, fat and volume — a much stronger satiety combination than oats alone.

I’m stressed. I’m fasting. I’m eating less. So why am I not losing weight — and why am I exhausted?

Because weight regulation is influenced by far more than the fasting window alone.

Chronic stress can alter HPA-axis signalling and cortisol output, affecting blood glucose regulation, appetite, sleep and recovery.

Poor sleep can reduce insulin sensitivity and make appetite regulation harder.

Persistent low-grade inflammation can further disrupt metabolic signalling.

And prolonged under-fuelling can reduce training capacity, spontaneous movement and overall energy expenditure — while increasing fatigue, hunger and cravings later in the day.

The pattern can become:

stress → fasting harder → under-fuelling → low energy → less movement → cravings → larger evening intake → poorer sleep → repeat

This is why simply eating less or fasting longer is not always the answer.

Fasting is a tool. It is not automatically the right tool when the body is already under physiological stress.

The better question is:

Is my current strategy actually supporting my energy, glucose regulation, insulin sensitivity, muscle mass, sleep and recovery?

Weight loss is not just about eating less.

The whole metabolic environment matters.
