Able and Active Physiotherapy Able and Active Physiotherapy I moved to New Norfolk in March 2020 in search of greener landscapes and fresher air.

My name is Ryan Soto, I am a Physiotherapist and recently started Able and Active Physiotherapy at the Derwent Valley Medical Centre to provide a local physiotherapy option for the Derwent Valley community. Since graduating from La Trobe University with my Masters in Physiotherapy (2015), I have worked in regional and rural Victoria across a variety of settings including hospitals, nursing homes, rehab wards, community outpatients and in patients’ homes. After nearly a year at the Tasmanian Health service I decided to step out on my own and start Able and Active Physiotherapy. I am happy to see all ages and conditions and I have a particular interest in treating older people with chronic conditions, decreased mobility, lower back pain, and shoulder issues. My philosophy is to give patients the tools and knowledge to assist them to better manage their condition and accomplish their goals. While I do provide manual therapy, my main treatment strategy with patients involves getting them stronger, improving movement and reducing pain.

Try the rectangle step progression for your easy exercise of the day. Two lunges forward, a side hop, two backwards lunges and a hop to the side back to your starting position. As always use support if you need to and perform in a range, frequency, and intensity that does not aggravate, agitate, or escalate your pain. So those lunges don't need to be deep and you sideways leaps don't need to be far. Give it a go!

Strong hips are a key component of aging well. Give this easy exercise a go in a range, frequency, and intensity that does not aggravate, agitate, or escalate your pain.

Keep your hips moving with this easy exercise of the day! Standing hip rotations, lift your bent knee up, then rotate to the side, place your foot on the ground and then re-raise your bent knee and rotate back to the front starting position and lower your foot to the ground. Use a balance support if needed. Perform all movements in a range, frequency, and intensity that does not aggravate, agitate, or escalate your pain levels.

A strong butt is a key part of mobility! A hip hike/hitch is Able and Active Physio's easy exercise of the day. Keep your leg straight, no bending of your hip or knee. Just lift/elevate one side of your hip/pelvis. Your foot will rise about an inch/2.5cm off the ground then lower and repeat. This will help strengthen your hip/pelvis stabilizing muscles.

Walking is great but it's not enough, here is a simple way to get more out of a walk. When walking faster or skipping go in a range, frequency, and intensity that does not aggravate agitate or escalate your body. Start of easy and slowly build up. You need to practice the skills and abilities that you want to maintain throughout your life and the ability to move quicker is something you don't want to lose.

Able and Active Physio presents your quick tip! Anything can be a weight to help you get stronger! Fancy gym equipment is nice, but not always necessary. Find something that is comfortable to lift, then lift and repeat. In this video I use a kettle bell (gym weight), rock, brick, watering can, and small log. So get moving and get stronger
