With multiple confirmed cases of RSV this past week, itβs more important than ever to stay informed and stay protected. π‘οΈπΆπ΅
RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) often feels like a common cold, but it can be much more serious for the vulnerable members of our communityβespecially infants, young children, and older adults.
Weβve put together some quick tips on how to keep your family safe this season.
π SYMPTOMS
In most adults and older kids, RSV brings standard cold symptoms. Keep a close eye out for:
βοΈ A persistent, hacking cough
βοΈ Fever and a runny nose
βοΈ Wheezing or difficulty breathing (especially in little ones)
βοΈ Irritability, lethargy, or poor feeding in infants
π§Ό PREVENTING THE SPREAD
βοΈ Wash hands frequently β Good old-fashioned soap and water works wonders.
βοΈClean high-touch zones β Regularly wipe down phones, door handles, and toys.
βοΈ Stay home if unwell β Protect your workmates, school friends, and vulnerable neighbors.
βοΈ Get vaccinated β Speak to our team about available immunisation options for high-risk individuals.
π MANAGEMENT
Because RSV is a virus, antibiotics won't work against it. For mild cases, management is all about comfort and symptom relief:
βοΈ Rest and hydration β Keep fluids up to prevent dehydration (water, or breastmilk/formula for babies).
βοΈ Symptom relief β Paracetamol and/or ibuprofen can help manage fevers and discomfort.
βοΈ Saline drops β These help clear tiny, congested noses before feeds.
β οΈ WHEN TO SEEK IMMEDIATE CARE
If you or a loved one experience rapid or shallow breathing, severe wheezing, or lips/fingernails turning blue, seek medical attention immediately.
