Understanding the cost of private obstetric care is an important part of planning your pregnancy, and we want to make that as clear and straightforward as possible.

Fees vary depending on the service provided. Medicare rebates apply to many consultations and scans, which helps offset the out-of-pocket cost. A referral from your GP is generally required to access these rebates.

Please note that bulk billing is not available at this practice. Like many specialist services, the level of care, continuity and access we provide, including 24-hour availability and integrated ultrasound, reflects a significant investment in your wellbeing throughout pregnancy.

When it comes to a baby's growth, size really does matter.

Fetal growth restriction happens when a baby is measuring smaller than expected for their gestational age, or when there is changes in the blood flow through the umbilical cord or baby. A detailed ultrasound checking the baby's head, abdomen and thigh measurements, plus Doppler blood flow studies of the cord, brain, liver and uterine arteries, helps us diagnose and manage this closely and confidently.

Iron deficiency is another one of those things we monitor regularly during pregnancy. It's something a lot of women don't even realise they're experiencing until it shows up in a blood test.

During pregnancy, your body needs significantly more iron to support your growing baby and the increased volume of blood your body is producing. When iron levels drop too low, it can leave you feeling exhausted, dizzy, short of breath or just generally flat.

The tricky part is that many of these symptoms overlap with normal pregnancy tiredness, which is why routine blood tests are so important. They help us catch it early and put a plan in place before it becomes a bigger issue.

Management depends on how low your levels are. Sometimes dietary changes are enough, focusing on iron-rich foods and being mindful of what helps absorption. Other times, iron supplements or further intervention may be recommended.

If you've been feeling more drained than usual, it is always worth mentioning at your next medical appointment. 🤍

There's always a lot of conversations happening online about birth plans and what the 'right' way to give birth looks like. At Newcastle Obstetrics we don't believe there is one right way and absolutely nobody 'fails' at birth based on their delivery. 💛

Every pregnancy is different and every birth journey looks a little different too, whether that's a vaginal birth, an induction or a caesarean. What matters most to Dr Tanya and our team here isn't how a baby arrives, it's that mum and bub both end up healthy and well.

Where ongoing obstetric care is required, appointments are generally scheduled every four weeks until around 32 weeks, then fortnightly until 36 weeks, and weekly thereafter until birth.

This schedule may be adjusted depending on your individual circumstances. Ultrasound is often integrated into visits, allowing care decisions to be guided by information available at the time of assessment.
