The bloody show🍾🍾🍾 I often share in my classes how beautiful and romantic the French language can be -certainly not the German language 🤣. They even manage to make the mucous plug sound poetic- le bouchon (muqueux) 👨🏻‍🎨 so what is it? Le bouchon muqueux, the mucous plug or in Australian called the bloody show is a thick jelly-like substance that seals the cervix during the pregnancy. As the cervix begins to soften and your body is getting ready for labour, it may be released. If it comes away too early the cervix is very clever and just makes it again. So how does it look? The best way to describe it, it’s similar to egg white often with streaks of blood in it. And of course Mother Nature always has a plan, it acts as a protective barrier. Not everyone will experience the release of le bouchon muqueux, and for those who do, it can happen days before labour begins- so it’s not a reliable sign of labour. This little story clearly stuck with one my lovely couples… so much so that they gifted me my very own bouchon! Definitely a memorable keepsake!! ❤️😎

As a Midwife and a woman who has birthed a baby, I thought being a birth partner would be a breeze when my wife gave birth to our daughter. In fact I found it one of the most stressful experiences seeing someone I love so much go through something so powerful and the ‘doer’ in me had to sit back and let her labour and birth unfold uninterrupted. She rocked labour and had a great birth (despite me 🤣), but having experienced birth from a third angle I have so much more respect and compassion for partners during birth. It’s a hard space to sit.
Yet another reason why birth preparation is so unbelievably valuable, not just for the birthing person but for everyone in the birthing space. I always say, ‘Remember, it’s your baby’s birthday’

Spaces available for my Calmbirth Courses:
21st & 22nd March
9th & 10th May

I can give women life-saving medications and resuscitate babies, yet we are still the lowest paid of our profession in the country

I do wonder how many couples have I met along their journey into parenting…….I guess a few 😊
Since I became a midwife 20 years ago I have always been teaching groups and since 2017 the Calmbirth program ❤️
