AMH stands for Anti-Mullerian Hormone, and it's one of the key markers used in fertility assessment.

The tiny cells in developing egg sacs secrete AMH. A blood test measuring AMH levels gives an indication of ovarian reserve, essentially how many eggs remain at a given point in time.

A few important things to know:
• AMH can be tested at any time during the menstrual cycle
• Oral contraception does not affect AMH levels
• AMH measures egg quantity, not egg quality
• It is one of several tools used alongside age and other test results

"Any time you'd like to see a fertility specialist, even if it's just to do some basic tests and reassurance, I'm very happy to see you - however soon into your journey." - Dr Erin Fuller

IVF success rates in Australia are reported at the clinic level and published through YourIVFSuccess, an independently verified, government-funded website.

Success is measured across five different measures, reflecting outcomes at different stages of treatment, from egg retrieval through to embryo transfer and live birth.

At Genea Newcastle, outcomes across all five reported measures are above the Australian national average.

For context, the reported live birth rate per first IVF egg retrieval cycle at Genea Newcastle is:
• 69.4% for patients under 35 (52.3% nationally)
• 46% for patients aged 35-42 (30.6% nationally)

Published success rates are based on groups of patients and cannot predict individual outcomes. Age, ovarian reserve, fertility diagnosis, and overall health all play a role.

Age is one of the most important factors in egg freezing.

Younger eggs generally have higher survival rates through the freezing and thawing process and are more likely to result in a successful pregnancy later.

For eggs frozen before age 35, survival rates after thawing are approximately 85-90%, with pregnancy rates of 30-50%.

After age 38, eggs are less likely to tolerate the freezing and thawing process effectively.

"With egg freezing... I will be very happy when you come to me under the age of 35, but really any time until about age 38 is good too." - Dr Erin Fuller

Egg freezing is a way of preserving fertility by capturing eggs at a younger age for potential use later.

The process involves:
• Hormone injections to stimulate egg production
• Egg retrieval under anaesthesia
• Freezing through a technique called vitrification

When the time comes to use them, thawed eggs are fertilised with s***m and the resulting embryo is transferred to the uterus.

Success can depend on a range of factors including age at the time of freezing, egg quantity, and overall health. No fertility treatment guarantees a specific outcome, but egg freezing offers a proactive option for those thinking ahead.

Eggs can remain frozen safely for an extended period of time.

AMH testing is a useful tool in fertility assessment, but it has limits worth understanding.

What it can tell you:
• An estimate of your current ovarian reserve (egg quantity)
• How your results compare for your age group

What it can't tell you:
• Egg quality (there is currently no test for this)
• Whether or not pregnancy will occur
• A single "normal" result (levels vary by age and individual)

AMH is one piece of the picture. A fertility specialist reviews it alongside age, cycle history, and other investigations to build a complete picture.

Endometriosis doesn't automatically mean infertility.

Between 30-50% of women with endometriosis experience difficulty conceiving. The chronic inflammation associated with the condition can affect the reproductive structures involved in conception and implantation.

Where treatment is needed, options may include:

• Laparoscopic surgery to remove abnormal tissue
• Intrauterine insemination (IUI)
• In vitro fertilisation (IVF)

The right approach depends on the stage of endometriosis and individual circumstances.

"The diagnosis and management of endometriosis and its impact on fertility can be very challenging... which makes it all the more rewarding helping these women restore their quality of life and overcome infertility." - Dr Erin Fuller

Endometriosis is a gynaecological condition affecting 1 in 9 women in Australia.

It occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of it, such as around the fallopian tubes, ovaries, or behind the uterus. In some cases, it can affect the bowel or bladder.

Common symptoms include:
• Pelvic pain, particularly around menstruation
• Heavy or irregular periods
• Pain during in*******se
• Fatigue and bloating
• Infertility

Endometriosis can be difficult to diagnose, and symptoms can look different for everyone. Some people experience significant pain, while others have no symptoms at all.

Early awareness is key to timely care.

Many people are surprised to learn that fertility investigations alone can sometimes be enough to help couples conceive.

"Around 50% of the patients who undergo testing and investigations with me fall pregnant without needing further treatment."

Ovulation tracking helps identify the most fertile days in your menstrual cycle.

By monitoring hormonal changes and physical signs such as cervical mucus or basal body temperature, we can better understand when an egg is released.

This allows couples to time in*******se more effectively and maximise the chances of conception.

Sometimes, even small insights into your cycle can make a big difference.
