Happy Book Week ✨

Reading with kids builds far more than just basic literacy- it shapes how they see themselves and the world around them.

Reading together creates a calm, co-regulating space to nurture empathy, focus, and emotional growth. By exploring diverse stories, you open the door for big conversations that broaden your child’s worldview and deepen your bond.

Our Speech Pathologists frequently work with parents wanting to build language-rich homes and deeper connections with their kids. Books are one of our absolute favourite tools to do this!

You don’t need to read every word to make storytime impactful. Here are simple ways to foster a love for books, even if you have language difficulties or aren’t a confident reader yourself:

🖼️ Talk about the pictures. You don’t have to read the words! Describe and ask questions about what you can see.
🔄 Choose books that are predictable and repetitive. ‘Where is the Green Sheep’ is a fantastic example of this!
🧭 Follow your child’s lead- let them flick through pages & explore.
🔊 Make animal noises and sounds. Be silly!
🚗 Connect stories to real life.
📚 Visit your local library- borrow books or join a free event. Wallsend and Newcastle Library have some great free kids story time events.
🥳 Celebrate fun book events- we recently loved the ‘Room on the Broom’ performance!
🧸 Act out the stories in the books with toys.
🌜 Add reading into your daily routine- before bed is the perfect time!
📕Choose interactive books- touch & feel, push & pull or music books.

Happy Reading 🥰

Happy Book Week! ✨

As a Speech Pathologist and a Mum, stories are one of my favorite tools for connection. Inclusive books foster deep understanding and empathy, opening the door for honest, beautiful discussions with our little ones.

I have a curious 4-year-old who is learning to navigate the world around him. Kids are naturally kind, compassionate, and understanding- they inherently want to know how they can adapt so everyone gets to join in on the fun. These stories are such a great first step toward those meaningful conversations.

Representation matters. When children see characters who use AAC devices, wheelchairs, hearing aids or navigate the world neurodivergently, it normalises human diversity. I want my children to grow up in a much more inclusive and accessible world and that starts with the stories we read today.

Here are some of the books we have loved reading and talking about 🧡
