🌕 Tonight, a near-total “Blood Moon” lunar eclipse will light up the night sky. If you’re in the Americas, Europe or West Africa, you’re in for a spectacular show, but unfortunately those of us down here in Australia will miss the main event. Still, even if we can’t see the eclipse from our backyard, I love the fact that people thousands of years ago looked up at the same Moon and stars and gave them meaning…today we are taking a little trip back to Persian traditions and the four “Royal Stars”: ⭐ Aldebaran = East, ⭐ Regulus = North, ⭐ Antares = West and ⭐ Fomalhaut = South.
Tonight, Fomalhaut, the “Watcher of the South”, is part of the symbolism that certain people are connecting with this eclipse, as the Moon moves through Aquarius and the southern quarter of the sky associated with Fomalhaut.
Astronomically, the Moon isn’t actually eclipsing Fomalhaut…the connection is symbolic, although from some locations the Moon and Fomalhaut may appear relatively close in the sky, which is where I think it gets really fascinating, because in these traditions, when darkness crossed the domain of a celestial guardian, it could represent a disruption of the natural order. Maybe, symbolically, it’s a beautiful reminder to look at our own lives too… what needs to come to the surface? What are we ready to let go of? Where do we need stronger boundaries, and where do we need to finally take the wheel?
Same Moon, same stars, thousands of years of stories and completely different ways of understanding them… honestly, when you really think about it, we’re just human beings on a tiny rock, looking up at the same vast universe our ancestors did, trying to make sense of our place in it. How can anyone look at something like this and not see the magic in it? ✨💖✨
