Why is every retired greyhound automatically labelled a “rescue”?

Many greyhounds retire healthy, well cared for and ready for their next chapter. Moving into a loving family home is rehoming—not rescuing.

Words matter. Calling every retired greyhound “rescued” creates the impression that every trainer or owner mistreated their dog—and that simply isn’t fair.

I’ve always wondered how faith fits into politics.

If someone’s Christian values call for honesty and integrity, how do they reconcile that with a political environment where the truth can be stretched, facts presented selectively, or promises changed for political gain?

Can a person hold firmly to their faith and still succeed in politics without compromising those values? I’d be interested to hear how others see it.

All racing industries have a past that includes things people should be ashamed of. I won’t defend cruelty or make excuses for anyone who mistreats an animal.

In my view, racing—including greyhound and horse racing—already has plenty of oversight. I don’t see a need to keep adding more rules. The existing rules need to be enforced properly, and people who deliberately do the wrong thing should face tougher consequences. In serious cases, that could mean years in prison.

If evidence of cruelty comes to light, I’ll speak against it and support action against the people responsible. Most owners and trainers with a conscience wouldn’t accept that behaviour. There are rogues in every industry, but they shouldn’t define everyone else.

It’s simple: enforce the rules and come down hard on those who break them.

Why do groups such as Neighbours of Fish Farming and the Bob Brown Foundation want salmon farms removed from Tasmania’s waters?

The salmon industry supports around 5,100 full-time-equivalent jobs across Tasmania, including work on farms and in processing, transport and local supply businesses. The Tasmanian Government put salmonid production value at $1.37 billion in 2022–23.

There are environmental concerns that need serious answers. But if the answer is to shut the industry down, what happens to the workers, families and regional businesses that rely on it?

Can Tasmania protect its waterways and wildlife while also protecting regional jobs?

My view on Tasmania’s proposed conversion practices bill

I believe everyone should be free to be who they are, whether they are transgender or have any sexual orientation. I support the bill passing to protect people from being pressured or forced to change who they are.

I also believe parents and children should be able to talk openly and respectfully. Parents should be able to ask questions like, “Can you help me understand how you’re feeling?” and listen with care. The bill says that parents discussing these matters with their children does not, by itself, count as a conversion practice.

I’ll be honest: I sometimes find the language around identity and pronouns confusing. But that’s no excuse to bully or disrespect anyone. We should be able to ask questions, learn and treat one another with kindness.

Animal welfare should mean looking at the whole picture. Australia’s racing industries operate under rules and regulation, yet feral cats and pet cats allowed to roam continue to kill native birds, frogs and small animals. Why don’t we see the same level of activist pressure to address that?

If the concern is protecting animals, shouldn’t the same standard apply across the board? Or are some groups choosing the issues they want to campaign on while overlooking the rest?

Greyhound racing is facing political pressure, and it raises an important question: what might be targeted next?

People across greyhound, thoroughbred and harness racing—and those who value working animals—should stand together. When we speak with one voice, we can make sure the debate is fair and all perspectives are heard.
