Busy minds are the number one reason people want to learn to meditate, and the number one reason people find it hard. If you think your thinking has to stop completely for you to find relief, you’ll find meditation agonising — mainly because you’re focusing too much on your thoughts in your effort to stop them. Whereas the simplest way to break the spell of an overthinking mind is to focus on your senses —do something that is naturally more sensory, get outside, walk around the block, smell the roses, listen to the birds, rub essential oils on your wrist, stroke your dog, soften or move your body. And soak up what you see, hear, fee, smell or taste with as much of your attention as possible, like a thirsty sponge. Even a few seconds here and there can make a big difference to how your mind feels.
