I love this teaching from Buddha because it reminds us that awakening doesn’t begin somewhere far away - it begins right here, in the body.

Postural awareness is a simple yet profound form of mindfulness centred on the body.

Each time we notice how we’re sitting, standing, walking or breathing, we return to the present moment.

We reconnect with the fullness of ourselves.

When we live with greater awareness of our posture, we’re no longer lost in thought or disconnected from our physical experience. We become more available to the peace, clarity, vitality and presence that Buddha speaks of.

Good posture - Karana Posture - isn’t just about alignment of the body; it’s also a practice of coming home to ourselves.

Posture is not a rigid position etched in time.

It’s a living expression of awareness, constantly responding to each moment.

So, if you’re aware that your posture isn’t good … relax.

Be kind to yourself. Let go a little.

And, also know that every time you’re more aligned counts.

All the conscious steps you take and harmonious movements you make, accumulate over time, to insinuate beautiful posture into your body.

Like water finding its course, good posture is less about control and more about allowing your body to organise itself around awareness …

Fascia is everything!

It houses the third or perhaps it’s the first bodily system for the circulation of fluids, the other two being the cardiovascular and the lymphatic systems.

It’s through the fascia - the fluid spaces that exist in the body in and under the skin and between and around the body’s organs, muscles, nerves, blood vessels and bones - that the entire body is transformed into a vast interconnected lake.

Cells, electrolytes, nutrients, hormones and waste are all transported through this fluid network.

The collagen in fascia provides strength and structure, allowing or restricting your range of movement and this is where Posture comes in.

Aligned posture promotes healthy collagen and minimises tension and strain on the collagen fibres.

This is turn, bit by bit, enhances the health of every cell in your body AT A CELLULAR LEVEL and hence your overall health.

Even just a little more stretch or range of motion to create better fascial elasticity and balance where it’s needed will make a positive difference.

Food for thought for today.

“I’m not into that old stuff”.
One of my recent clients.

This woman’s comment made me smile. It’s a happy day at the office when my clients are on the same page as I am!

Aware of their body.

Feeling the changes that age brings.

And not prepared to just succumb to it or follow society’s script about ageing.

They’re motivated to maintain their aliveness and freedom to move.

And prepared to dedicate the time to this on a daily basis.

With the sensitivity to honour the body’s need for both active movement and passive, restful stretching times.

Eager to embrace an ageing life full of vitality and aliveness.

The body longs to move in all directions - to twist, reach, bend, squat and extend - keeping the fascia elastic and flossed, the joints nourished and the whole system balanced and alive.

A variety of movement restores harmony and rhythm to the verses of your body’s song.

Posture is part of that rhythm too, even when you’re still. Good posture allows movement to flow efficiently through the body with less strain and tension.

For most moderns humans like us, one movement is missing more than any other … spinal extension. Our way of life today keeps us folded forwards, compressing the spine, chest and breath. That’s why spinal extension is such an integral part of the Karana Posture Program.

Learning to safely extend the body is one of the most important things you can do restore space, breath, balance and freedom to your body - that may have forgotten how to move well.

Olé!
It’s been sometime since I did yoga at the beach!

And sometime since I visited my favourite beach - Alexandria Bay. But once there the yoga came naturally, unplanned.

And then I saw some friends, chatted too long and ended up walking out of the park in darkness!

The days are getting shorter!

But as I heard recently - “life has no repeat” or replay. So squeeze the most out of the daylight hours each day.

Ever been taught how to walk?
Probably not!

Most of us never give walking a second thought.
Walking seems automatic, instinctive … and in many ways it is.

Written into every cell, every bone, the fascia, muscular reflexes and your habitual tensions however, are the echoes of your ancestral blueprint.

And unlike antiques, not everything old means good.
