Are electrolyte supplements actually necessary or are they just great marketing?

Everywhere you look on social media, sponsored creators are telling us that our diet alone isn’t enough, but more isn’t always better!

For the average person, electrolyte supplements are largely driven by hype rather than medical need.

That said, electrolytes can be useful in specific situations such as prolonged endurance exercise, but most people already get plenty of electrolytes from their daily diet

No need to boost a billion-dollar supplement industry by unnecessarily purchasing electrolyte supplements 💸

☕️Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world, with over 2 billion cups being consumed every day

👉🏻 Coffee consumption is the most important source of caffeine intake, and any discussion of the health effects of coffee is inextricably intertwined with those of caffeine

▫️Coffee consumption has been associated with reduced risk of both coronary heart disease and stroke

▫️There is an association between coffee intake and anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects within the liver

▫️Coffee consumption is associated with a 15% reduction in risk of chronic kidney disease and end stage renal disease

🧠 Studies show an approx 25% lower risk of cognitive disorders when coffee is consumed - the relationship was non-linear

🩺 Coffee is not a treatment but it can be part of à healthy lifestyle

Hitting your daily protein goal doesn’t mean you have to rely on protein powders and bars.

Spreading protein out across 3 main meals and 2 snacks makes reaching your goals a lot more achievable!

This also keeps your muscle protein synthesis optimised, your energy levels stable, and hunger cravings at bay.

Another benefit of minimising protein powders and bars is a more nutrient and fibre dense diet.

There is definitely still a place for protein powder and bars especially in regards of convenience.

🍉 A wide variety of plants in the diet increases microbiome diversity, which has been shown to reduce the risk of conditions such as T2DM, CVD, plus may also lower the risk of cancer.

🥑 In addition to this, many plants are packed with fibre and water, which means you can eat a large amount for a fraction of the calories of processed snacks - aka volume eating

🍓To help you on your journey to increasing the amount and variety of plants in your diet, use the chart provided to keep a record of the types you are consuming. Try to build on this each week

▫️Ready-to-drink protein shakes are super convenient, but they are not all created equal!

▫️If you are looking for maximum protein with minimum calories and sugar, the Optimum Nutrition Pure Pro 50 contains only 245 calories and 50g of protein. It also contains a massive 1224mg of calcium!

▫️If you are looking for a shake to keep you full, look for an option with added fibre. The Man Shake and Paul’s Plus Protein are both good sources of fibre

▫️Some protein shakes have significantly higher sugar content. These are best used for heavy athletic performance or fuelling intense workouts. Some of these include Up & Go Protein Energise, Masters Protein Choc and Musashi High Protein.

▫️These taste is obviously an important factor!! Which one is your favourite?

🧈 As a dietitian, one of the most frequent questions I get is, ‘Should I use butter or margarine?’.

🌱When comparing butters and margarines, a crucial metric to consider for heart health is the saturated fat content; keep it as low as possible

👉🏻 Plant sterols may assist with reducing absorption of cholesterol as they compete for absorption with other food sources of cholesterol. Two teaspoons of a sterol spread are required to gain benefit and are mostly beneficial when consumed alongside a meal which contains cholesterol

🥕 Plant sterols have been shown to lower the carotenoids in the blood, so it is recommended that you eat at least one serve of yellow or orange coloured fruit/vegetables every day

😋 If you absolutely love the taste of butter 🙋‍♀️, consider using a lighter dairy blend for every day use, and the pure butter for when it really matters!

🌱 My number one gut health tip is to eat as diverse a range of plants as possible. Why? Because different plants contain different polyphenols and types of fibres that feed your gut microbes. By eating a wide variety of plants you will nourish a wide variety of gut microbes.

🫜 What counts as a plant extends beyond fruit and vegetables, don’t forget herbs, spices, nuts, seeds, grains and legumes!

❓As a dietitian, one of the most common questions I get is, “Which protein bar should I actually be buying?”.

🍫Not all protein bars are created equal and the best bar depends entirely on your goals!

👩🏼‍🍳 Obviously the protein content is important but calorie, fibre, sugar and saturated fat content may also be considerations.

🦠 The type of fibre may also be worth bearing in mind. Generally the fibre will be prebiotic fibre, such as Polydextrose or insulin. These may lead to significant bloating or gas if your gut bacteria are not used to these … so start slow!

🌯 As a dietitian, I see a lot of ‘health halo’ marketing in the wrap aisle!

☝🏻Wraps can provide energy, fibre and protein, however, don’t stress too much over finding the perfect wrap, focus more on the filling!

🍗 Add lean protein - chicken, tuna, tofu

🥗 Colour - Fill at least half the wrap with veges - tomato, cucumber, capsicum, grated carrot

🥑 Healthy fats - Avocado, hummus, nut butter

👉🏻 The wrap is the vessel which can provide a little protein plus fibre, and when paired with the right fillings, can become a nutrient dense meal!
